What a software engineer earns in Stockholm, 2026
The median software engineer in Stockholm reports SEK 752K a year in total pay, a senior SEK 843K, and the same senior at Spotify SEK 1.17M. This page puts the level ladder, the employer ladder, what lands after Stockholm tax, and the reason the ladder is flatter than London's in one place, with the source and date on every number, so you can walk into the recruiter call with a figure instead of a guess.

Two sources, two different questionsThere are two honest numbers for Stockholm and they disagree, because they measure different things. Levels.fyi collects self-reported total pay, base plus stock plus bonus, and its reporters skew towards the employers worth reporting. Statistics Sweden counts every software and systems developer in the country, base pay only, and publishes a year late. Read SCB as the market and Levels.fyi as the top third of it.

Levels.fyi, Greater Stockholm, read 13 September 2026. Total pay a year, in SEK; the monthly column divides by twelve so you can compare it with the number a Swedish recruiter will say, which is always gross a month.
SCB's figure for the occupation group mjukvaru- och systemutvecklare is an average of SEK 55,500 a month on 2024 data, SEK 53,400 for women and SEK 56,100 for men. Sites that break the same statistics down by region put Stockholm at roughly SEK 59,600 a month, Gothenburg and Malmö between 46,000 and 52,000, with a spread from about 40,000 at the tenth percentile to 67,000 at the ninetieth, and seniors of eight years or more between 58,000 and 80,000. That is base pay, before the stock that lifts the Levels.fyi medians.
Two adjacent ladders, from our own guides. Game programmers in Stockholm average about SEK 48,000 a month on Glassdoor and game designers about SEK 38,000, both below the general software ladder, with King (SEK 743K at senior) and EA DICE (SEK 1.17M at SE 3, with EA stock) the exceptions; see the game client developer and game designer guides. AI and machine-learning roles sit above it: Stockholm's financial sector reported an 8.4 percent vacancy rate for AI and ML engineering roles against 3.2 percent IT unemployment, and the shortage shows up in the offers.
Pay by employer
Where the level ladder lands at four companiesThe employer decides more than the level does. The same senior title reports SEK 1.17M at Spotify and SEK 730K at Ericsson, and the difference is almost entirely stock. These are Levels.fyi medians for Greater Stockholm, read 13 September 2026; each company's page is linked from the sources.

Google pays the most in the city and it is not close: an L5 senior reports SEK 1M base plus SEK 644K a year of stock and a SEK 72K bonus, and the ladder starts at L3 where Spotify's senior ends. The office is small, so the Google Stockholm guide is mostly about the global loop and the wait for team matching. Spotify is the top of the Swedish-founded market and the only such employer where stock is a large share of pay: an Engineer II reports SEK 691K base plus SEK 158K a year of stock, a senior SEK 980K plus 185K. Its loop is priced accordingly, four to five onsite rounds including a case study. Klarna pays a clear ladder with little stock, SEK 724K base at senior, and its equity story changed with the 2025 US listing, so ask what the grant is worth today rather than what the level page says. King, part of Microsoft since 2023, reports SEK 743K base at senior with no stock in the median, which understates it where Microsoft grants apply; the King guide covers the loop. Ericsson runs the longest ladder from the lowest start, SEK 476K at JS4 to 929K at JS8, and cut about 1,600 roles in Sweden in January 2026, so expect the ranges to be held rather than raised this year.
The two startups everyone asks about, Lovable and Legora, publish no ranges and have too few Levels.fyi reports to quote. Both are raising at valuations that let them pay above the Swedish ladder and both weight equity heavily, so the question to ask on the first call is the cash number and the strike price, separately. Consultancies (Netlight, Tietoevry, the big four's tech arms) sit on or under the SCB average, and the US offices in Stockholm (Google, Meta, Microsoft outside King) pay on their own global ladders, which start where Spotify's ends.
What lands in your account
Stockholm tax, 2026Swedish salaries are always quoted gross per month, and the gap to net is smaller than people expect at engineer pay. Stockholm's combined municipal and regional tax is 30.55 percent in 2026. State income tax of 20 percent applies only to the part of income above the brytpunkt of SEK 660,400 a year, about SEK 55,000 a month, which is roughly where a mid-level engineer sits. Below it you pay municipal tax less the basic and earned-income deductions; above it, every extra krona is taxed at about 50 percent.
| Gross a month | Net a month | Effective rate | Who earns this |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEK 45,000 | SEK 33,906 | 24.7% | Entry level, SCB median |
| SEK 50,000 | SEK 37,318 | 25.4% | Mid-level at a Swedish employer |
| SEK 60,000 | SEK 43,149 | 28.1% | Senior at Klarna or King, base |
| SEK 100,000 | SEK 62,446 | 37.6% | Senior at Spotify, base plus stock |
Net figures from lonefterskatt.com for Stockholm 2026, including the basic and earned-income deductions and the burial fee, excluding church fee. Your own number depends on the municipality you live in (Solna and Danderyd are lower, Botkyrka higher) and on the tax table your employer applies.
Then add what does not show on the payslip. Most employers with a collective agreement pay into the ITP1 occupational pension on top of salary, 4.5 percent of pay up to SEK 52,125 a month and 30 percent of the part above it, which for a senior engineer is SEK 40,000 to 60,000 a year of deferred pay that a London or Berlin offer does not usually match. Statutory vacation is 25 days and tech employers commonly give 30. Sick pay, parental leave at about 80 percent of salary for most of 480 days, and health insurance through the state are not benefits you negotiate; they are the floor. When you compare a Stockholm gross with a foreign one, compare after those, not before.
Why the ladder is flatter than London's
Collective agreements, one revision a yearSweden has no statutory minimum wage. Pay is set through collective agreements between employer associations and unions, and most tech employers of any size are covered by the agreements between Almega and Unionen or Sveriges Ingenjörer. Under those agreements your salary is individual, set with your manager, but it is revised once a year in a lönerevision whose size follows the industrial benchmark, the märke, which the export industry sets for the whole labour market. The 2025 agreement fixed it at 3.4 percent for 2025 and 3.0 percent for 2026.
That single number explains most of what people notice about Stockholm pay. The ladder is compressed, because everyone moves at roughly the same rate each year and there is no bonus cycle to open it up: a strong senior at a Swedish-owned company rarely earns twice what a mid-level does, where in London or Berlin they might. Equity is rare outside Spotify, Klarna and the foreign-owned offices, so total pay and base pay are close to the same thing for most people. And the pay you start on is the pay you keep, plus three percent a year, unless you change employer: the only reliable way to move up the ladder quickly is to switch, which is why Stockholm engineers who do so every three years out-earn those who stay.
The same agreements give you the things the gross does not show, which is why the comparison with a foreign offer has to be made after tax, pension and leave. A SEK 843K senior in Stockholm and a £95K senior in London are not far apart once London rent, pension and holiday are taken out, and the Stockholm one gets home at five.
If you are moving here for the job
The permit floor and the check that actually bitesCitizens of the EU and EEA need no permit. For everyone else, a work permit needs a salary of at least SEK 34,470 a month gross for applications received from 16 June 2026, which is 90 percent of the Swedish median of SEK 38,300 published by Statistics Sweden. The floor resets when a new median is published, so check Migrationsverket's current figure before you apply. Every software engineering offer in this city clears it.
The check that bites is the second one. Migrationsverket also requires that the terms match the collective agreement level for the role, and the relevant union is asked to confirm it. An offer well above the floor but below the norm for a Stockholm engineer can still be refused, which is why a foreign employer offering a Stockholm engineering role at SEK 40,000 a month is a warning rather than a bargain. Employers that Migrationsverket has certified process in weeks; others can take months. Spotify, Klarna, King, Ericsson and the larger startups sponsor routinely and say so in the posting.
Relocation packages exist at Spotify and the US offices and are thin or absent at startups; ask for the flight, a month of temporary housing and help with the personal number, in that order. The Sweden tech interviews guide covers notice periods, the loop shapes and the interview culture; this page stops at the money.
The number to say on the recruiter call
Löneanspråk, gross, a monthSwedish recruiters ask for your löneanspråk, your salary expectation, on the first call, and they mean a number in kronor a month, gross. Not a range, not “I'm flexible”, not an annual figure in another currency. Deflecting reads as evasive here, and the recruiter needs the number to place you on the ladder before the hiring manager sees you.
Build it in three steps. Find the company on Levels.fyi and read the level you are applying at; if the company is not there, use the level medians at the top of this page. Take the upper half of that level's range, because the median is what people who did not negotiate got. Then divide by twelve, round to the nearest thousand, and say it once, plainly: “I'm looking at 72,000 a month.” Stop talking. If the recruiter says the range tops out lower, ask what level that range is for; often the answer is that you are being placed a level down, which is the real negotiation.
The starting number matters more in Stockholm than anywhere else you might work. Because pay is revised once a year at about three percent, whatever you accept is what you will earn, plus the märke, until you leave. There is no bonus cycle, no mid-year adjustment and no equity refresh to fix it later at most employers. The room is now. Our guides on answering the salary question and negotiating the offer cover the words; Calibrd's pay benchmark reads the posting and says what that role should pay at your level, in kronor.
FAQ & sources
The short answersWhat is the average software engineer salary in Stockholm in 2026?
Two answers, because the sources measure different things. Levels.fyi, which collects self-reported total pay skewed towards the better-paying employers, puts the Stockholm median at SEK 752K a year across all levels as of September 2026, with the middle half between SEK 611K and 915K. Statistics Sweden's occupational statistics, which cover every software and systems developer in the country, put the average base at SEK 55,500 a month, about SEK 666K a year, on 2024 data, and sites that break that down by region put Stockholm near SEK 59,600 a month. Read the SCB number as the market and the Levels.fyi number as the top third of it.
What does a senior software engineer earn in Stockholm?
A median of SEK 843K a year in total pay on Levels.fyi as of September 2026, with the middle half between SEK 737K and 1.02M and the top ten percent above SEK 1.31M. Where you sit in that range depends mostly on the employer: a senior engineer at Spotify reports SEK 1.17M including stock, at Klarna SEK 758K, at King SEK 743K base, at Ericsson roughly SEK 730K at JS7. SCB's senior figures are lower because they are base pay across the whole country, roughly SEK 58,000 to 80,000 a month.
Which company pays software engineers the most in Stockholm?
Google, at a senior median of SEK 1.72M in total pay, the highest figure in the city, though its Stockholm office is small and hires in single digits. Among Swedish-founded employers it is Spotify by a distance, and the gap is stock. Its Stockholm ladder on Levels.fyi runs from SEK 541K for an associate engineer to SEK 1.17M for a senior and up to SEK 2.1M for staff, with SEK 86K to 185K a year of stock from Engineer I upwards. Klarna's ladder tops out at SEK 852K for a lead engineer with little stock; King's senior median is SEK 743K, base only; Ericsson runs from SEK 476K to 929K. The US-owned offices in Stockholm (Microsoft through King, Google, Meta) and the AI startups raising at high valuations (Lovable, Legora) can pay above the local ladder, but neither of the two startups publishes ranges, so you ask on the first call.
How much of a Stockholm salary do you take home after tax?
Roughly seventy to seventy-five percent at typical engineer pay. Stockholm's combined municipal and regional tax is 30.55 percent in 2026, and state income tax of 20 percent applies to the part of your income above SEK 660,400 a year, about SEK 55,000 a month. With the basic and earned-income deductions, a gross of SEK 50,000 a month lands about SEK 37,300, SEK 60,000 lands about SEK 43,100, and SEK 100,000 lands about SEK 62,400. On top of the net, most employers with a collective agreement pay into the ITP1 occupational pension at 4.5 percent of salary up to SEK 52,125 a month and 30 percent above that, which is real deferred pay that a foreign offer usually does not include.
Why is software engineer pay in Stockholm lower than in London or Berlin?
Because Swedish pay is set inside collective agreements and revised once a year at a rate the whole labour market shares. Sweden has no statutory minimum wage; most tech employers of any size are covered by agreements between Almega and unions like Unionen and Sveriges Ingenjörer, under which pay is set individually but revised annually in a lönerevision that follows the industrial benchmark, the märke, which was 3.4 percent for 2025 and 3.0 percent for 2026. That compresses the ladder: a strong senior at a Swedish-owned company rarely earns twice a mid-level, where in London or Berlin they might. Equity is rare outside Spotify, Klarna and the foreign-owned offices, and the Swedish comparison is total pay including pension, thirty days of vacation and paid parental leave, which is why the gross looks worse than the life does.
What salary do you need for a Swedish work permit in 2026?
At least SEK 34,470 a month gross for applications received from 16 June 2026, which is 90 percent of the Swedish median salary of SEK 38,300 as published by Statistics Sweden. The figure resets when a new median is published, so check Migrationsverket's current number before you apply. Every software engineering offer in Stockholm clears it comfortably; the check that actually bites is the second one, that the salary is in line with the collective agreement level for the role, which the union is asked to confirm. An offer well above the floor but below the norm for the job can still be refused, so an employer offering you a Stockholm engineering role at SEK 40,000 a month is a warning, not a bargain.
How do I answer the salary question in a Swedish recruiter call?
With a monthly number, gross, anchored on the employer's own ladder. Swedish recruiters ask for your löneanspråk, your expectation, on the first call and they mean a figure in kronor a month, not a range and not a deflection. Look the company up on Levels.fyi first, pick the level you are applying at, and say a number at the upper half of that level's range; if the company is not there, use the Stockholm level medians on this page. Say the number plainly and stop. Because pay is revised once a year at roughly three percent, the starting number matters more here than anywhere: you will not negotiate it back up in year two, so the room is now.
