Unity interview, and the take-home in the middle.

Updated · Sources at the end

Unity's loop is short on surprises and long on one thing: a skills assessment in the middle that you then explain to engineers. Unity's own recruiting team describes four stages, a recruiter screen, a hiring manager screen, a skills assessment and a video "onsite", and says every candidate for a role gets the same structured questions, built around its four Principles. Candidates fill in the assessment: a timed Codility test in some loops, a take-home with a week to finish in others, and for test roles an unfinished Unity project to fix and extend, which one 2026 candidate put at five to seven hours of work. The company behind it has changed a lot since 2023. It announced about 1,800 job cuts, a quarter of its staff, in January 2024, kept cutting in smaller rounds through 2025, shut the ironSource Ads Network on 30 April 2026 and is closing its French offices, where graphics teams worked. Meanwhile its Grow business, built on the Vector ads platform, grew 35% year on year in the second quarter of 2026, and that is where a large share of today's openings sit.

01

Who Unity hires

Unity hires in two halves. The engine side (Create) wants C++ and C# engineers for the core engine, the Editor, graphics (lighting, shaders, Vulkan), platform ports such as embedded Android and the web, and performance tooling. The ads side (Grow) wants machine learning engineers, applied scientists and Go or Java backend engineers for Vector, Offerwall and the monetization SDKs. On 27 October 2026 Unity's job board listed 128 jobs, 80 of them in engineering, machine learning, data or security, and 69 of those 80 were senior, staff or principal. By location the engineering jobs sat mostly in the United States (Mountain View, San Francisco, Bellevue and New York), Canada (Montreal), Vilnius, Copenhagen, Tel Aviv and the UK. At the end of 2025 Unity had 4,412 full-time employees, 65% in technical roles and 77% outside the United States.

Before you apply, see how your resume reads to a hiring manager with a free resume review.

Unity's published process is the same for every role, and the structured questions are the same for every candidate on a role. What changes by team is the skills assessment and the technical interviews around it.

  • Track · Engine

    Engine, Editor and platforms

Postings ask for strong C++ in a large production codebase, working C#, and a habit of measuring before optimizing: memory, threading, cache behaviour, and how calls and memory cross between C# and native code. Candidates report a Codility test or a take-home, then technical interviews; a Montreal senior in 2025 had a call with the lead and engineers about how they reached their answers, and a US senior in 2025 was asked to debug a data structure implementation live.

  • Track · Graphics

    Graphics

A Vancouver senior graphics programmer in 2021 describes a take-home challenge and four one-hour interviews, and quotes one question: how a GPU determines a pixel's mip level. That question also heads the interview questions Unity's graphics lead, Aras Pranckevičius, published in 2016, beside designing a lighting system, a graphics API abstraction, and storing and rendering a large city. Postings ask for HLSL, modern GPU architecture and rendering techniques, with C# for the render pipeline code and C++ for the engine.

  • Track · Ads and ML

Grow: ads, Vector and machine learning

Postings ask for Python and PyTorch for modeling, and Go or Java for the services that bid in ad auctions and rank offers in real time. Most of Unity's live machine learning roles are in Mountain View.

  • Track · Quality

    Test engineering

A Vancouver test engineer in 2022 had a 45 to 60 minute call with a QA lead, then a 90-minute Codility test of three easy to medium problems. Other test candidates got a take-home with a week to finish: an unfinished game in Unity to fix and extend, reported in 2021, in Vilnius in 2024, and in March 2026 as bugs, features, animation, UI and Timeline sequences, five to seven hours of work.

02

What is the Unity interview process?

Unity's recruiting team publishes its four stages and says they are aligned across its offices down to the questions asked. The detail inside each stage comes from dated candidate reports on Glassdoor, Taro and Reddit, from 2021 to March 2026. Formats differ by team, and several reports are a few years old, so each is dated.

01
Recruiter screen
About 30 minutes by phone or video

Unity says this is a conversation about you, the role and the company, with time for your questions.

02
Hiring manager screen
30 to 60 minutes by phone or video

Unity says the hiring manager goes deeper into your experience with behavioral and situational questions.

03
Skills assessment
A timed Codility test, or a take-home with a week to finish

Reported forms: 90 minutes and three easy to medium problems (test engineer, 2022), a two-hour Codility link (senior DevOps, 2025), and for test roles an unfinished Unity project to fix and extend. Ask your recruiter which form your team uses. The section below goes through each.

04
Assessment review
A call with the lead and engineers, in some loops

A Montreal senior in 2025 had a call with the lead and engineers about how they arrived at specific answers. A senior in March 2026 found the technical round focused mostly on past experience rather than the take-home, so the step varies by team.

05
Virtual onsite
Several sessions by video, with the agenda sent in advance

Unity says you meet team members who ask job-specific questions and questions on its Principles. Reports range from three technical rounds over Zoom (US senior, 2025) to four one-hour interviews (graphics, 2021).

06
Decision
By the recruiter

A US senior in 2025 had feedback within 24 hours. Ask for the expected timeline at the end of the onsite and follow up once after it passes.

03

Unity take-home and Codility test: what candidates report

Reported formats and how to approach each

Unity calls this stage the skills assessment and says only that it tests the skills relevant to the job, technical or not. Candidates describe several forms, and the form depends on the team: a timed Codility test, a take-home with a week to finish, and for test roles an unfinished Unity project. Several reports are a few years old, so each is dated below; ask your recruiter which form you will get.

  • The 90-minute Codility test: A Vancouver test engineer in 2022 had 90 minutes for three easy to medium problems; a 2019 new grad had four questions in 90 minutes; a senior DevOps candidate in 2025 got a two-hour link. Codility grades hidden test cases for correctness and speed, so check edge cases and complexity before you submit.
  • The week-long take-home: Test candidates report a take-home with a week to finish, in 2021, in Vilnius in 2024 and again in 2026. Write it to be defended: short notes on trade-offs, tests for the tricky cases, and what you would do with more time.
  • An unfinished game in Unity: For test roles the take-home is a Unity project with bugs to find and features to finish: animation, UI and Timeline sequences in the March 2026 report, five to seven hours of work. Learn the Timeline and UI tools beforehand if you have not used them, and keep changes small and easy to explain.
  • The review afterwards: A Montreal senior in 2025 had a call with the lead and engineers about how they arrived at specific answers. Not every team does this: a March 2026 senior loop focused on past experience instead. Reread your own code the day before either way.
  • Debugging someone else's code: A US senior in 2025 was asked to debug a data structure implementation in a live round. Practise reading unfamiliar code out loud: reproduce the failure, state your guess, test it, then fix it.

The form depends on the team, and Unity does not publish it. Ask your recruiter which assessment you will get, how long you have, which language to use, and whether a review call follows.

The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at Unity.

What Unity screens for

Unity says its interviews are mostly behavioral and situational, that it asks every candidate on a role the same questions, and that those questions test its four Principles. Its recruiting post spells out what it looks for under each one.

  • Lead with empathy and respect: listening first, valuing other people's views and using them to guide what you do
  • Communicate with candor: sharing context, giving and taking feedback, challenging assumptions and escalating disagreements so they don't linger
  • Act with urgency: owning high-impact work and acting on it now, with priorities clear and questions asked when something is unclear
  • Prioritize the greater good: putting what is best for customers and the creator community ahead of personal preference, and challenging the status quo for it
  • Structured answers: Unity says its questions start with "Tell me about a time when", "Give an example of when" and "Describe a situation where", so every Principle needs a real story

Base salary ranges from Unity's own live job ads, read on 27 October 2026. Most US and Canadian ads give two or three location zones, and each row runs from the lowest to the highest figure across them; the ads do not say which city sits in which zone. The ads say the role may also carry equity and a discretionary bonus. Ads for Copenhagen, the UK, Vilnius and Tel Aviv publish no pay, so ask the recruiter for the range on the first call. Calibrd benchmarks the pay on any posting you scan against its level and location.

How to prepare for an Unity interview

  1. Pick your half of Unity before you apply. Engine, Editor and graphics roles want C++ and C#; Grow roles want Python, Go or Java and ads or machine learning experience. Read the ad for the languages and match your CV to them.
  2. Write one story for each of Unity's four Principles: empathy and respect, candor, urgency and the greater good. Unity asks every candidate on a role the same structured questions, so have a clear example ready for each.
  3. Ask the recruiter on the first call which skills assessment your team uses, how long you get, and whether a review call follows.
  4. For a Codility test, practise easy to medium problems on a timer in the language you will use, and finish two problems cleanly before you try the third.
  5. For a take-home, write it to be defended: comments on the trade-offs, tests for the edge cases, and a short note on what you would do next. Reread it the day before the review.
  6. Engine candidates: practise explaining memory, threading and garbage collection across C# and native code, with one real profiling story from your own work.
  7. Graphics candidates: work through the four questions Unity's graphics lead published out loud: mip selection, a lighting system, a graphics API abstraction and rendering a large city.
  8. Ask for the expected decision date at the end of the onsite, and follow up once after it passes.

This guide covers Unity's engineering, graphics and machine learning hiring. Unity makes the engine and the ads platform and publishes no games of its own. On 27 October 2026 it had no open game designer or technical artist roles, so this guide leaves those loops out. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
