Adyen publishes its process: an application review, a recruiter screen, a team interview, a skills assessment, a leadership interview and a final interview with someone from its Management Board. For engineers the skills step is a timed HackerRank test, and 2026 candidates report one task that makes you call a real API with Java's standard HTTP client and parse what comes back. Then come a coding round, a system design round that often turns into payments, and two rounds about leadership and the Adyen Formula, its eight principles.
The last two rounds are where people are surprised. One 2026 candidate wrote that they did not structure their answers and were rejected there, after clearing the technical rounds. Adyen also checks how deeply you understand payments, and a rejection means a reported six-month wait before you can apply again.

Who Adyen hires
Adyen processed €803.8 billion in the first half of 2026 for merchants worldwide, and hires backend, infrastructure, data and platform engineers to run it. On 2 October 2026 it had 53 open roles in development and infrastructure: 21 in Amsterdam, 12 in Chicago, 11 in San Francisco, 4 in Singapore, 3 in São José dos Campos, and one each in New York and Madrid. It is office-first and does not offer remote-only roles. It is a recognised sponsor in the Netherlands, and its US ads say it will not sponsor H-1B cap applications.

Adyen's online test and the two leadership rounds
What candidates report, and how to prepareAdyen calls the step a skills assessment: a technical test or, for some roles, a case study presentation. For engineers it is a HackerRank test. Here is what 2025 and 2026 candidates report about it, and about the two leadership rounds that decide many offers after it.
- Two problems, little time: 2026 candidates report two problems in 60 to 70 minutes, and one wrote they could not reach the second in time. Practise medium problems against a clock, and bank a working answer on the first before polishing it.
- A real HTTP call: Candidates report a task that calls an API with Java's standard HTTP client and parses the output. Know HttpClient, status checks and JSON parsing well enough to write them without searching.
- Only Java for Java roles: Candidates for Java roles report the test offered no other language. Check the role, and practise in the language it names.
- Your test code comes back: A 2025 Madrid candidate and a 2020 Amsterdam candidate both report the next round reviewing their own test code. Write it as if someone will ask you to explain every line, and keep notes on your choices.
- Structure in the leadership rounds: A 2026 candidate wrote they did not structure their answers with the STAR format and were rejected in that round. Prepare four or five stories with a clear situation, your action and a measured result, and map each to a Formula principle.
- Payments depth: A 2024 candidate was told the team wanted deeper payments experience. Know how an authorisation flows, what idempotency protects, and how card networks and acquirers fit together.
A rejection reportedly means six months before you can apply again, so it is worth preparing the leadership rounds as carefully as the code.

Adyen does not post pay in its European ads, and Levels.fyi and Glassdoor could not be read on 2 October 2026, so these are the only figures candidates published with their own reports. Treat them as single data points, not bands; Amsterdam pay is higher than Madrid's.
