TSMC interview process, from the assessment to the fab panel.
Updated · Sources at the end
TSMC hires most of its people to work inside a fab, and its interviews are built around that. TSMC's own careers page says there may be assessments before the interview, and candidates describe an online English test and a personality test for engineers, and an aptitude, reading and English assessment for technicians. Then comes a panel: about three people for process and equipment technicians in Arizona, and up to six engineers for some engineering roles, who ask about your background, how you handle pressure, and whether you can work 12-hour day and night shifts.
TSMC Arizona says it has more than 3,500 employees in Phoenix and a $265 billion investment plan. Its first fab has made chips on the N4 process since the fourth quarter of 2024, the second fab's building is finished with N3 volume production targeted for the second half of 2027, and work on a third and a fourth fab has started. The Arizona site made a profit of about $514 million in 2025, its first full year, Tech Times reported.

Interviewing at TSMC? Below are the questions candidates report. For the ones your exact role and level will get, paste the posting. Your first mock is free.
Who TSMC hires
In Arizona, TSMC hires process technicians, equipment technicians, facilities technicians and apprentices, plus process, equipment, process integration, yield and intelligent manufacturing engineers, and IT and software staff. Technician ads ask for a high school diploma or GED; engineering ads ask for a degree, often a master's for yield and product roles. In Taiwan, English applies to international engineering and software hires, who report an English test that a recent TOEFL or TOEIC score can replace. TSMC's Kumamoto fab in Japan (JASM) and its Dresden fab in Germany (ESMC) hire too: ESMC plans about 2,000 jobs, and some JASM ads ask for business-level English.
Most TSMC hiring is for the fab itself: technicians who keep the tools and the wafers moving around the clock, and engineers who own a process step or a set of tools. The software and automation teams are smaller and interview differently, so they get their own track below.
Track · Process tech
Process technicians
You run the production shift: watch wafer flow, tool status and dashboards, respond to alarms with the written procedure, and hand problems to engineers. TSMC asks for a high school diploma or GED, Excel, and discipline with procedures. Candidates report an assessment, then an interview with a supervisor or a small panel.
Track · Equipment tech
Equipment technicians
You maintain and repair the tools: preventive maintenance, parts swaps, and getting a down tool back into production. TSMC's ad says more than 90% of the shift is in the cleanroom, gowned. Candidates report three rounds in 2026, with HR, the management team and the engineering team.
Track · Engineer
Process, equipment and integration engineers
Each engineer owns a module such as lithography, CMP, wet clean or etch. Candidates report a panel of three to six engineers, a self-introduction, behavioural and resume questions, then a second round with managers. Many Arizona engineering ads offer six to twelve months of training in Taiwan.
Track · Apprentice
Technician apprentices
TSMC Arizona's registered apprenticeship takes people with no fab experience. You apply with a resume and a completed skills assessment, then interview with hiring managers. Process and facilities apprenticeships last 12 to 18 months and equipment ones three to four years.
Track · Software
Fab automation, AMHS and IT
Intelligent manufacturing engineers look after the AMHS, the overhead system that carries wafer pods between tools, and the software that schedules and monitors the fab. IT and software candidates report a HackerRank test, and Taiwan-based teams ask for a ten-minute self-introduction presentation.
What is the TSMC interview process?
TSMC publishes four steps: apply, resume screening, one or more interviews with possible assessments before them, and an offer. The detail below comes from candidate reports from 2025 and 2026, marked as reported, and from TSMC Arizona's job ads and apprenticeship page.
TSMC asks you to state your education, work history, certifications, languages and motivation. Technician ads look for procedure discipline and Excel; engineering ads look for the right degree and fab or lab experience.
Reported for engineers as an English test and a personality test, with the English test waived for a recent TOEFL or TOEIC score in Taiwan. Reported for technicians as aptitude, reading and English. IT candidates report a HackerRank test of three questions in 90 minutes.
Your background and your availability. Candidates report questions on 12-hour shifts, nights and weekends, and whether you would travel to Taiwan for training.
Reported as about three people for process and equipment technicians, and as six engineers with three to five years' experience for a module process engineer role. Expect behavioural and situational questions, deep questions on your resume, and some technical ones.
Reported as a five-minute introduction for a process integration engineer in Arizona and a ten-minute presentation for software roles in Taiwan, where the supervisor asks questions as you go.
Engineers and softwareReported as more situational: handling tool downtime under pressure, working across modules, and how you deal with conflict.
EngineersCandidates report a background check and a drug test. Offers can come with a training plan, which for many engineers includes months in Taiwan.
TSMC assessment: English, personality and skills tests
From TSMC's own pages and candidate reportsTSMC's careers page says there may be assessments before the interview. Which ones you get depends on the job and the country, and candidates have not named the test provider.
- Engineers: online English test: Reported in Taiwan and for engineering roles. Candidates in Hsinchu report that a TOEFL or TOEIC score from the last five years can replace it, so send one if you have it.
- Engineers: personality test: Reported as an online questionnaire. Answer consistently and honestly; the same traits come up again in the panel, so your answers should match the stories you tell there.
- Technicians: aptitude, reading and English: Reported as technical aptitude, reading comprehension and English, with some mechanical aptitude and basic maths. Review basic electricity, fractions and percentages, and read instructions slowly.
- Apprentices: the skills assessment: TSMC Arizona asks apprentice applicants to complete a skills assessment with the application. Only complete applications are invited to interview.
- IT and software: HackerRank: Reported as three coding questions in 90 minutes for an IT engineer role. Practise timed problems on arrays, strings and hash maps.
Calibrd cannot rehearse the timed tests or the personality questionnaire. It can prepare you for the panel interview that follows, technician roles included, with a mock round led by a senior technician who asks hands-on troubleshooting questions.
What TSMC screens for
TSMC names four core values, Integrity, Commitment, Innovation and Customer Trust, and calls integrity its most important one. In a fab interview they show up as these:
- Integrity: you follow the procedure and report a mistake at once, even when nobody would notice
- Commitment to the shift: 12-hour days and nights, weekends, and overtime when production needs it
- Calm troubleshooting when a tool or a lot goes wrong
- Cleanroom and safety discipline, every time
- Customer trust: every wafer belongs to a customer, so quality comes before speed
