Every stage and duration below is TRM's own, from trmlabs.com/interviewing and its job ads, read on 24 September 2026. The round contents come from candidate reports on Glassdoor and Blind. Glassdoor puts the average at about 15 days across 28 reports.

TRM hires against three leadership principles, named in every ad, and adds AI fluency as a baseline for every role.

Few candidates have published TRM's exact questions. These come from the stages and principles TRM publishes, plus the rounds candidates describe.

Every TRM ad says most processes include an AI skills assessment and that you are evaluated on applied AI fluency. For engineers, a candidate in April 2026 described it as using an AI coding tool to make changes to an existing codebase. TRM has not published the task, so this is a routine for that kind of round rather than the questions themselves. Note that TRM does not allow your own AI tools, notetakers or coaching apps in interviews without its approval; the AI round is the one where it asks you to use one.

• Read the codebase before you prompt: Spend the first minutes finding the entry point, the data model and the tests. Prompts written with that context get useful answers; prompts written blind produce code that does not fit.
• Say what you will ask the tool for, then ask: Break the change into small steps and narrate each one. The interviewer is grading your judgement, and they can only see it if you say it.
• Check every change the tool makes: Read the diff, run the tests, and look for the usual failures: invented functions, a changed signature, a silently dropped edge case. Fix it yourself when that is faster.
• Write or update a test: A change with a test that proves it works is the clearest signal of craft in a round built on someone else's code.
• Know when not to use it: For a one-line fix or a naming change, just type it. Using the tool for everything looks like dependence; using it where it saves time shows fluency.

Practise on an open-source repository you have never seen: pick a small issue, fix it with an AI coding tool in 45 minutes, and explain every change out loud.

TRM posts US base ranges on its ads, read on 24 September 2026: backend engineers at $180K to $210K, senior full stack, data product and database engineers from $190K up to $250K depending on the team, AI and agent engineers at $200K to $275K, and university graduates at $130K to $150K, with equity on top. Engineering managers for the data platform post $230K to $260K. Ranges for Canada and South America are not posted. Calibrd benchmarks the pay on any posting you scan against its level and location.

1. 01Practise changing an unfamiliar codebase with an AI coding tool against a clock, narrating as you go. It is the round that sets TRM's loop apart.
2. 02Review someone else's pull request out loud before the code review round: correctness, edge cases, naming, tests.
3. 03Prepare one system design around graph data: tracing funds across wallets and chains, with queries fast enough for an investigator and alerts that fire in time.
4. 04Write two stories for each leadership principle: a plan run as an experiment, something you built to a high standard fast, a time you made a team clearer.
5. 05Turn off your own notetakers and assistants before every call. TRM does not allow them without approval.
