Dataiku interview, decoded.
Dataiku's engineering take-home is public. The Millennium Falcon challenge, on Dataiku's GitHub since 2020 and updated in September 2025, asks you to build a web app that computes the odds the Millennium Falcon reaches Endor before the Death Star destroys it: a backend that reads the routes from a SQLite database, a single-page front end where you upload the Empire's plans, and a command-line tool that prints the same odds. Dataiku asks for code you would put into production and be proud of, and says you may use AI as long as you say which tool you used and why. Candidates in 2026 put the work at ten to fifteen hours or more.
The take-home sits in a four-step process that Dataiku's ads spell out: a 45-minute call with technical recruiting, a 90-minute video call with an engineering team lead, the technical assessment as a home test or live coding, and two hours of final interviews with its VPs of engineering. Dataiku was founded in Paris and says it has more than 1,200 employees and $350 million in annual recurring revenue. In September 2026 it had two software engineering roles open, both remote-friendly.

Who Dataiku hires
The roles and the backgroundDataiku hires software engineers for its core platform and infrastructure engineers, with product work in Java, Python and Angular. In September 2026 its Fullstack Software Engineer role was open to remote work from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, and its Infrastructure Engineer role to remote work in France. The ads run in English, while the most detailed candidate accounts are in French.
What is the Dataiku interview process?
Round by roundThe four steps come from Dataiku's own job ads. The detail on each comes from candidate accounts on Reddit in 2026, and the take-home from Dataiku's public repository.
Your background, the role and your expectations.
One candidate describes coding plus follow-up questions on their CV.
Usually the Millennium Falcon challenge: backend, front end and CLI, at production quality. The section below goes through it.

What Dataiku screens for
What every round is really testingThe take-home says plainly what Dataiku looks for, and candidates' rejections show how strictly it reads the spec.
- Production-quality code you would be proud of
- Following the specification exactly, including file paths and edge cases
- A complete product: backend, front end and CLI all working
- Honesty about tools: naming the AI you used and why
- Clear explanations of your design in the interviews that follow
Dataiku interview questions
Candidate-reported themesThe technical themes come from the Millennium Falcon specification and candidate accounts. The behavioural questions are built on what the process asks of you.
Behavioural & motivation
- Walk us through the design of your take-home and what you would change with more time.
- Tell me about code you shipped that you were proud of. What made it production quality?
- Describe a time you had to deliver across the backend and the front end.
- Why Dataiku?
Technical
- Graph search with constraints: Routes between planets with travel times, a fuel limit, refuelling days and a countdown
- Probability: The chance of capture by bounty hunters, compounding each time they try
- Full-stack delivery: A backend reading SQLite, a single-page front end with file upload, and a CLI
- Configuration and paths: A JSON config whose database path may be absolute or relative to the config file
- Testing and code quality: Tests and structure you would put into production
These are the reported themes — your loop is role-specific. Paste the actual posting and Calibrd predicts the questions for that exact role and level.
Predict my Dataiku questions →The Dataiku Millennium Falcon challenge: how to pass it
The spec's traps, and how to handle themThe Millennium Falcon challenge is Dataiku's public developer test. The Falcon has an autonomy in days of fuel, each jump uses fuel equal to its travel time, refuelling takes a day, and bounty hunters on a planet on a given day give a 10% chance of capture each time you land or refuel there. You compute the best odds of reaching Endor before the countdown ends, show them in a web page and print them from a CLI. Candidates who were rejected in 2026 say the grading is strict, so the details below matter.
- Resolve the database path correctly: The spec says routes_db can be absolute or relative to the location of millennium-falcon.json itself, not to where you run the program. One candidate was rejected after about ten hours of work for not handling relative paths from the terminal. Test the CLI from another directory.
- Model waiting and refuelling as moves: Search over states of planet, day and fuel left. Waiting a day and refuelling are both moves, and the hint says waiting on a safe planet can avoid the hunters. Refuelling where hunters are present counts as a capture attempt.
- Get the probability right: Each capture attempt adds to the risk as 1/10, then 9/100, then 81/1000. Count attempts along the path and maximise the chance of success. Check your answers against the four examples: 0%, 81%, 90% and 100%.
- Treat the front end as graded work: The page must upload the Empire's JSON and show the odds as a percentage. One backend candidate was marked down for a minimal front end, so make it clean and usable even if backend is your specialty.
- Say which AI you used: Dataiku says using AI is a good thing, and asks you to state which tool helped and why. Add a short section to your README, and make sure you can explain every part in the interviews.
Scope your time before you start. Candidates report ten to fifteen hours or more; write down what you would add with more time, and ask the recruiter about the deadline.
Pay
What the offer looks likeLevels.fyi gives a median of €75.2K a year for Dataiku software engineers in France from 28 submissions, and a median package of €86.2K for an L3 engineer in Paris with four years of experience, including stock (read on 26 September 2026). Dataiku's French ads carry no pay range. Calibrd benchmarks the offer against your level and location in the report.
How to prepare for a Dataiku interview
In order- Read the Millennium Falcon spec twice before writing code, and list every rule: fuel, refuelling, waiting, hunters, countdown, paths.
- Run the four examples as tests and get 0%, 81%, 90% and 100% before you build the front end.
- Run the CLI from a different directory to check relative database paths.
- Give the front end real care, even for a backend role.
- Write a README with how to run it, your design choices, what you would add, and which AI tool you used and why.
- Plan for ten to fifteen hours, and ask the recruiter about the deadline.
- Prepare to defend your design for two hours with the VPs of engineering.
- Keep other processes going. Candidates describe a long process and rejections late in it.
This guide covers Dataiku's software engineering hiring. The steps come from Dataiku's job ads, the take-home from its public repository, and the experience of it from candidate accounts on Reddit in 2026. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
