Flow Traders interview, from the maths test to the ETF case study.

Updated · Sources at the end

Flow Traders makes markets in exchange-traded funds, and its interviews keep coming back to them. Graduate traders take a timed test of mental maths and number sequences, then a recruiter interview that candidates say includes real ETF questions, then an interview with a trader full of brainteasers, and finally a case study on ETFs led by two senior traders. Graduate developers take a HackerRank test in C++ or Java, then a CodePair session with a senior developer and a final interview with a team lead.

Flow Traders was founded in Amsterdam in 2004 and has been listed on Euronext Amsterdam since 2015. It reported €91.2 million of net profit for the first half of 2026 on €303.7 million of net trading income, and its Horizon 2030 plan adds digital assets, tokenised assets and quant research to the ETF business. On 5 October 2026 it had 44 open roles, most in Amsterdam, Hong Kong and New York.

01

Who Flow Traders hires

Flow Traders hires graduate traders four times a year, from penultimate and final year students, plus graduate software developers, quant researchers, and experienced traders and engineers. Technology makes up more than 40% of the global team, Flow says, with C++ and Java developers building the trading software alongside Python and data engineers. For graduate developers it looks at interest in financial markets more than commercial experience. Of the 44 roles open on 5 October 2026, 14 were in Amsterdam, 13 in Hong Kong, 10 in New York, 5 in London and 2 in Chicago.

Flow Traders publishes a separate five-step process for graduate traders and graduate developers, and a shorter one for experienced hires. ETFs run through all of them: they are the firm's core business.

  • Track · Trading

    Graduate traders

A numerical test of mental maths and sequences, a recruiter interview on the business, an interview with a trader with brainteasers, and a final ETF case study led by two senior traders. Then a three-month training programme in Amsterdam.

  • Track · Technology

    Graduate developers

A HackerRank test in C++ or Java, a recruiter interview, a CodePair session with a senior developer, and a final interview with a team lead. The graduate programme lasts a year and rotates you through teams.

  • Track · Experienced

    Experienced hires

Four stages: the application, a recruiter interview, a team interview, and a final interview with trading or technology leadership. Technology roles add a HackerRank test, multiple choice or open-ended.

  • Track · Research

    Quant researchers

A two-month graduate programme on trading problems and alpha, and PhD graduate roles in New York. Flow publishes no step-by-step loop for research, and candidates have reported little, so expect the experienced-hire shape.

Flow Traders numerical test and HackerRank: what to expect

From Flow's own pages and candidate reports

Every Flow Traders graduate process starts with an online test. Traders get timed maths and sequences; developers get HackerRank.

  • Traders: mental maths: Reported as about 60 timed questions of mental arithmetic: multiplication, division, percentages and decimals. Practise daily against a clock, without a calculator or paper.
  • Traders: number sequences: Reported as 26 sequence questions in 25 minutes. Practise spotting differences, ratios, alternating patterns and sequences that combine two rules.
  • Developers: HackerRank in C++ or Java: The graduate programme asks for C++ or Java. For other technology roles Flow says the test asks questions about the role, as multiple choice or open-ended answers.
  • Then a recorded video: Some trader candidates report a recorded video stage with questions such as how Flow makes money. Prepare a two-minute answer on the ETF business before you start.

Calibrd cannot rehearse the timed tests. It can prepare you for the interviews and the case study explanations that follow them.
