Zalando interview, decoded.

Zalando describes its software engineer interviews in a careers blog post and on its How We Hire page. The steps below come from those two pages. The company notes the process varies slightly by team, and some roles add a coding challenge or another task. An older first-hand account from a former Zalando interviewer (2018) is cited where it adds detail, and is marked as such.

Zalando's system design and architecture interview gives you a short customer problem and asks for a system with several parts to solve it. The company says it judges six things: architecture, scalability, technology choices, resilience, operational excellence and security. Unusually, it tells candidates what to read, and it publishes the guidelines its own teams use to design APIs.

• The reading Zalando recommends: Zalando's careers blog recommends Alex Xu's System Design Interview, volumes 1 and 2. Practise explaining your reasoning out loud, and expect questions on scalability and bottlenecks.
• Zalando's RESTful API guidelines: Skim the principles section of Zalando's public RESTful API and Event Guidelines (API first, OpenAPI specifications). Designing an API the way Zalando's own teams do is an easy way to show you have done your homework.
• The Tech Radar: Zalando's public Tech Radar lists the technologies it uses and trusts. Check it for the tools in your job ad, so your technology choices in the interview are ones you can defend.
• Operational excellence and security: These are two of the six criteria, and candidates often skip them. For every design, say how you would monitor it, how it fails, and how you would protect customer data.

The coding and general tech interviews follow the same pattern: after each answer, expect a discussion of your trade-offs.

Zalando asks candidates to read its Founding Mindset, the four qualities it says guide how everyone works there. The hiring manager interview reviews how you already work in line with them.

• Customer focus: start with the customer, and count results, not activity ("the measure of a good day is accomplishment, not activity")
• Speed: think big and act fast, and disagree and commit, seeking commitment rather than consensus
• Entrepreneurship: act like an owner, dare to fail, and dive into details when it matters
• Empowerment: high challenge with high support, honest and timely feedback, and transparency by default

Zalando describes what each interview assesses but does not publish its questions, and the candidate accounts we could read are not specific enough to quote. The practice questions below are built from what the company says it tests, so what you practise matches what it scores.

Median total pay by level in the Berlin area, as Levels.fyi's listing showed it on 29 September 2026 (last updated 3 September 2026); we read it from the site's search listing because the page itself was not readable. The Berlin median across levels was about €93K. Zalando does not publish salary bands, and its recruiter call covers your salary expectations early. 1. Read Zalando's Founding Mindset before the hiring manager interview: it reviews how you already work in line with it.
2. Practise medium coding problems with the discussion afterwards: data structures, trade-offs, and runtime and memory cost.
3. For system design, cover all six criteria Zalando names, including operational excellence and security, which candidates often skip.
4. Skim Zalando's RESTful API guidelines and its Tech Radar, so your API and technology choices look like its own.
5. Pick two past projects to explain end to end for the general tech interview, including one failure and what you changed.
6. Ask about the office-first model: Zalando says the office becomes the default workspace from January 2027.
