SAP careers and interviews, and why every team runs it differently.

Updated · Sources at the end

SAP has no single engineering loop. Each team hires for its own opening, so a developer interview in Walldorf, Potsdam, Berlin or Munich depends on who is hiring. Candidates in Germany describe a short get-to-know call, one or two technical conversations with the team, and sometimes an on-site day. The coding can be an easy exercise, a set of Python tasks, or, in a February 2026 report from Potsdam, a review of AI-generated code.

Most of what you read online about an SAP HackerRank test comes from SAP Labs India, and from campus drives in particular. Those reports describe two coding problems plus multiple-choice questions on OOP, databases and operating systems, then technical, managerial and HR rounds. This guide covers both and says where each report comes from, so you can tell which applies to the job you applied for.

SAP is headquartered in Walldorf and had 111,397 employees at the end of 2025, with 37,965 full-time equivalents in development. It hired 10,241 people from outside that year, after a 2024 restructuring that affected about 10,000 positions.

01

Who SAP hires

SAP hires developers for its cloud and ERP products, with Java and Spring Boot, ABAP, C++ and Python all common in the ads. A 2026 Walldorf ad for a senior backend Java developer asks for Spring Boot, PostgreSQL and SAP HANA, API and event-based design, cloud-native work on SAP BTP and Kubernetes, CI/CD and observability, plus good English and German. Other Walldorf ads ask only for fluent English and treat German as a plus, so check each one. Students join as working students (Werkstudenten) and through the SAP iXp internship, and SAP's early-talent programs include STAR, its work-integrated study program. AI hiring is growing, with AI engineer, AI developer and working student roles for AI use cases in Walldorf and Potsdam.

Four routes in, and they are tested differently.

  • Track · Dev

    Experienced developers in Germany

A recruiter or get-to-know call, then technical interviews run by the team and the hiring manager. Reports from Walldorf describe two technical interviews on problem solving and coding and a third on system design and teamwork; senior candidates report Java, Spring Boot, Hibernate and microservices questions. No fixed online test shows up in the German reports.

  • Track · Student

    Working students and iXp interns

Usually two short interviews. Walldorf reports describe a first conversation where the team presents its work and asks about your CV, then a second round with an easy coding exercise, such as a palindrome check. One candidate wrote that even this coding round is uncommon at SAP.

  • Track · STAR

    STAR and dual study

STAR is SAP's work-integrated study program, and more than 200 apprentices, bachelor's and master's students start it in Germany each year. The Computer Science bachelor combines virtual studies at DHBW Mosbach with practical work in Walldorf. Candidates for SAP's dual study places report an applicant day in Walldorf with a presentation about SAP, then an interview with two employees and no test. A STAR ad from SAP Labs Latin America lists two online assessments, so the German process may differ by program.

  • Track · India

    SAP Labs India campus hiring

A HackerRank online assessment, then two technical rounds, a managerial round and an HR round. This is where most HackerRank reports come from, and it is the process the coding test section below describes in most detail.

What is the SAP interview process?

SAP's careers site describes three steps: an application review, interviews and assessments that depend on the role (recruiter and hiring manager interviews, technical or behavioural assessments), and an offer. Glassdoor puts the average process at about 25 days across all SAP roles, seen in search snippets. The rounds below are what candidates in Germany report, with the India steps marked.

01
Get-to-know call
About 30 minutes with a recruiter or the hiring team

Your background, why SAP, and the role. Ask here which programming language the technical interview will use; one Potsdam candidate was told they could choose and was then given Python.

02
Online coding test
Timed, on HackerRank

Two coding problems, easy to medium, plus multiple-choice questions on OOP, databases, operating systems, networks and data structures. Rare in German reports.

Mostly SAP Labs India
03
Technical interview
45 to 60 minutes with team members

Your CV and projects first, then a practical task. Reported tasks in Germany: an easy coding exercise in Walldorf, Python tasks that were not LeetCode-style, and in Potsdam in 2026 a review of AI-generated code with improvement suggestions.

04
Second technical or hiring manager round
30 to 60 minutes

For experienced hires, deeper questions in your stack (Java, Spring Boot, Hibernate, microservices) and system design basics, plus how you work in a team. Some candidates report questions about SAP's products.

05
On-site day
A day at the office

Reported for an associate developer role in Potsdam after the tech interview. Ask what happens on the day and who you will meet.

Some teams
06
Managerial and HR rounds
Separate interviews

Projects, motivation, pressure, location and salary. In Germany these topics are usually covered inside the team interviews.

SAP coding test: what candidates in Germany and India report

Reported problems and where they come from

Whether you get a coding test depends on where you apply. SAP Labs India campus reports describe a HackerRank assessment with two coding problems, from easy to medium, and multiple-choice questions on OOP, databases, operating systems, networks and data structures. In Germany, candidates report coding inside a team interview instead: an easy exercise, a few practical tasks, or a review of AI-generated code. Here is how to take each.

  • The two HackerRank problems (SAP Labs India): Reports name arrays, strings and trees most often, at easy to medium level. Read all the constraints first, write the simple correct solution, run it on the edge cases (empty input, one element, duplicates), and only then optimise. Submit a version that works before you chase the fastest one.
  • The multiple-choice questions (SAP Labs India): Expect OOP (polymorphism, access specifiers), DBMS (joins, keys, normal forms), operating systems (deadlock, critical sections) and output-prediction questions. Revise these as short definitions with one example each; they take less time than the coding and are easy marks.
  • The easy coding exercise (Walldorf students): A palindrome check is the reported example. Talk through the approach before typing, cover the edge cases out loud and state the time and space cost. At this level, clear reasoning is what gets noticed.
  • Practical tasks that are not LeetCode: Some German candidates report Python tasks closer to everyday work. Write readable code, use the standard library, name things well, and say what you would test. Ask the interviewer whether they want speed or production quality.
  • Reviewing AI-generated code (Potsdam, 2026): Read the code once for what it is supposed to do, then go through correctness and edge cases, error handling, readability and tests, in that order. Say which problems matter most and fix those first. Expect a follow-up on how you use AI tools yourself.
  • The language surprise: One Potsdam candidate who applied with Java and TypeScript was asked to refactor Python. Ask on the first call which language the task uses, and if the answer is open, be ready to read Python even if you write in something else.

SAP's teams set their own tasks, so these are patterns from reports. Ask the recruiter what the technical round involves, how long it lasts and which language it uses.

The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at SAP.

What SAP screens for

SAP's team interviews are short, so the behavioural side comes from a few recurring checks that candidates report.

  • A clear reason for SAP: candidates are asked why SAP and what they know about its products, and SAP's own hiring page says it looks at motivation
  • How you use AI tools, which a 2026 Potsdam interview asked directly and which the AI-generated code review tests in practice
  • Working across teams and countries, since many SAP products are built by teams in Germany, India and elsewhere together
  • Language fit for the team: some ads ask for good English and German, others for English only
  • A grounded view of yourself, from questions such as how another person would describe you

How to prepare for an SAP interview

  1. Read the ad for the language requirement. Some Walldorf ads ask for good English and German, others for English only.
  2. Learn what the team's product does and how it fits SAP's portfolio, so you can answer why SAP and this team.
  3. On the first call, ask what the technical interview involves and which programming language it uses.
  4. Practise reading and reviewing code you did not write, including AI-generated code, out loud and against a timer.
  5. Prepare a short, honest answer on how you use AI tools at work and where you don't trust them.
  6. For Java roles, revise Spring Boot, JPA and Hibernate, transactions and REST design, and have one system you built ready to explain.
  7. For SAP Labs India, practise easy and medium array, string and tree problems on HackerRank, and revise OOP, DBMS and OS basics.
  8. Expect slow replies. Candidates report waiting weeks for feedback, so follow up politely after a week and keep other applications going.

This guide covers SAP's developer, student and early-talent hiring in Germany, with SAP Labs India's campus process marked where reports come from there. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
