Canva interview, decoded.
Updated · Sources at the end
Canva is one of the few companies that tells engineering candidates to use AI in the interview. In June 2025 it announced a round it calls AI-Assisted Coding, which replaced its Computer Science Fundamentals screen for backend and frontend roles. Candidates for backend, machine learning and frontend jobs are expected to bring tools such as Copilot, Cursor or Claude and use them on a realistic product problem. Canva's own example prompt is to build a control system for managing aircraft takeoffs and landings at a busy airport. Canva says it tells candidates ahead of time that they will be expected to use AI, and recommends practising with the tools before the interview.
The round is easy to misread. It is scored on how you plan, how you direct the tool, and whether you catch what it gets wrong. In October 2025 one of Canva's interviewers published what he looks for, including three ways candidates fall short: showing off the tool, racing through features, and letting the AI do the work. This guide puts that round at the centre, with the rest of the loop around it: the recruiter call, the peer technical interview, the 3-hour final, the coding test some candidates report, and what Canva pays.
Canva's flagship campus is in Sydney. One of its job ads puts the product at 240 million monthly active users, and another says more than 50 million people download their designs every week.

Who Canva hires
Canva hires backend, frontend, machine learning, infrastructure and production engineers, mostly in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide), with research, data and machine learning roles also posted in San Francisco, London, Vienna and Beijing. The backend is built on Java, and a current job ad says so in plain words. The editor is written mainly in TypeScript, with a growing amount of React Native and native code. Machine learning roles work in PyTorch. Graduates join through Launchpad, a 12-month program for final-year students and people with up to two years of experience, and penultimate-year students can apply for a 12-week summer internship in Australia and New Zealand. The job ads we read say interviews are conducted virtually, and that you may be asked to solve a problem with an AI tool in some of them.
What is the Canva interview process?
Canva publishes its hiring process on its careers site, with notes for engineers at each step. It says the process usually takes 4 to 5 weeks from the first recruiter conversation to a decision, and that each role and level can differ. Canva does not say which step holds the AI-Assisted Coding round. Its engineering blog calls it the round that replaced a screening interview, and its job ads say some interviews ask you to solve a problem with an AI tool, so ask your recruiter which of your interviews it is. Candidate details below are marked as reported.
Canva's Launchpad page says you may be asked to complete a task before your first chat, and names coding challenges for technical roles. One candidate on Reddit in 2024 reported a coding test of 90 minutes for 3 questions, in Java only. An intern candidate in 2021 reported a HackerRank test. The section on the coding test below covers what is known.
Some candidates onlyYour experience and what you want next, plus the role and the culture. Canva says engineering candidates also get some technical questions on this call, so have your strongest project ready to explain in detail.
Canva calls it a peer-to-peer technical interview with a problem-solving challenge. Canva's blog says the AI-Assisted Coding round replaced a screening interview, so this is its most likely place; your recruiter can confirm. If it is, expect a realistic, open-ended product problem and your own AI tools on screen.
Other teams at Canva set a take-home challenge here. Canva says engineers skip it and instead get another opportunity to show their work. It doesn't publish the format, so ask your recruiter what this step involves for your role.
Canva says the final combines technical problem solving with questions about your experience. A candidate on Reddit in 2024 described a final made of a programming language fluency interview, a system design interview and a behavioural interview. The behavioural questions follow Canva's Skills Hiring Framework, and the company suggests answering in the STARR format.
Canva says the whole process generally takes 4 to 5 weeks from your first recruiter call to the outcome. Interviews may be recorded and transcribed with AI so interviewers can focus on you, and Canva says you can opt out without it counting against you.
Canva's AI-Assisted Coding interview: what it tests and how to pass
From Canva's own engineersCanva announced the round on its engineering blog on 11 June 2025, and one of its interviewers described what he scores on 20 October 2025. You share your screen with your own AI-integrated development environment and work on a realistic product problem that is deliberately complex and ambiguous. Canva's blog says these problems can't be solved with a single prompt. The interviewer scores three areas: engineering problem solving, technical depth and ownership, and how well you work with the AI. Canva says it still assesses computer science fundamentals through this round, so the tool doesn't replace knowing what good code looks like. Neither post gives the length of the round, so ask your recruiter.
- Why Canva made the change: Canva tested its old Computer Science Fundamentals questions on AI tools and found they produced correct, documented answers in seconds. It also says almost half of its frontend and backend engineers use an AI coding tool every day. So it moved to problems that need judgement even with AI help, and it watches how you use the tool. It's useful to know because it tells you what the interviewer is looking for: the decisions you make and the problems you catch.
- Set up before the call: The interviewer's own preparation tips are to have your preferred AI-integrated editor ready and a basic project structure set up in your language before the interview, so you don't spend interview time on it. Practise with the assistant beforehand until you know where it is strong and where it tends to go wrong. Canva says candidates with little AI experience often struggled in the pilot, because they couldn't tell when its suggestions were poor.
- Planning: clarify, then sketch: The strongest candidates take time to understand the requirements: they ask about scope, check their assumptions, and sketch an approach before writing code. With the airport prompt, that means asking how many runways there are, how emergencies are prioritised and what spacing rules apply, then deciding what to build first. Say your plan out loud so the interviewer can follow it.
- Development: give the AI bounded jobs: Canva's interviewer names the tasks strong candidates hand to AI: skeleton code, research on unfamiliar APIs, and routine implementation. When the assistant suggests something complex or unfamiliar, stop and check that it fits your constraints. Keep the quality high enough that the code could go up as a pull request for review, which is the standard the interviewer uses.
- Review everything it writes: Canva's blog lists finding and fixing issues in AI-generated code as a scored skill, and its pilot found that the best candidates reviewed and improved what the AI produced and debugged well when it failed. Read each generated block before you run it, test the edge cases yourself, and say what you checked. If you can't explain a line, you don't own it yet.
- Answer questions yourself first: One of the interviewer's tips is easy to miss: when the interviewer asks you a question, tell them what you think before you ask the AI. The round measures your judgement, so a question is a chance to show it. Going straight to the assistant gives that chance away.
- Three ways to fall short: Canva's interviewer names them. The AI Showcase: spending the round on prompting tricks and tool features and losing sight of the task. The Feature Marathon: accepting AI output quickly to ship as many features as possible. Hands-Off: treating the AI as a full solution generator and drifting out of the work. He says he would rather see careful problem solving and quality code than a long feature list.
- The discussion at the end: Expect to talk about your solution as a whole: what you built, why you made each technical choice, what you would improve with more time, and how it would scale in a real environment. Strong candidates also offer other approaches and weigh the trade-offs. Keep notes during the build so you can answer these questions clearly at the end.
To practise, take an open-ended product problem (the airport prompt, a booking system, a shared to-do list) and run 60-minute sessions with your own assistant: five minutes of questions and a plan, most of the time building in small checked steps, and the last ten minutes explaining what you built and what you would change. Record one session and watch how often you accepted code without reading it.
Canva coding online assessment: what candidates report
Reported by candidatesSome Canva candidates take a timed online coding test before they speak to anyone, but Canva publishes little about it. Its Launchpad page says early-career applicants may be asked to complete a task before the first chat, and names coding challenges for technical roles. The details people search for come from Reddit, and we could read them only in search result snippets: one 2024 candidate described the coding test as 90 minutes for 3 questions in Java, and an intern candidate in 2021 reported a HackerRank test. These accounts are from before the AI-Assisted Coding round arrived in 2025, so treat them as a guide to the format and check the details in your invitation.
- Who gets a coding test: Most likely early-career applicants: Launchpad graduates and summer interns. Canva's main hiring page lists no test before the recruiter call for experienced engineers, and the reports of a test come from graduate and intern candidates or don't say the level. If your invitation includes one, it will say the platform and the time allowed.
- 90 minutes for three problems: That is about 30 minutes a problem. Read all three first, start with the one you are surest of, and get a working solution in before you optimise. A correct brute-force answer that passes most tests is usually worth more than a clever one that doesn't run.
- One language, possibly Java: The 2024 report says Java was the only language offered. Canva's backend is built on Java, so practise in it if your invitation names it: collections, string handling, sorting with comparators, and reading input quickly. If you get a choice, use the language you are fastest in.
- What to practise: No candidate we could read named the problems. Prepare the common patterns of timed tests: hash maps and counting, sorting and intervals, two pointers and sliding windows, breadth-first search on a grid or graph, and simple simulations. Time yourself on sets of three problems in 90 minutes.
- AI and the online test: The AI-assisted format applies to Canva's live interviews. Nothing we found says AI tools are allowed in a timed online test, so assume they aren't unless the invitation says so, and follow its rules exactly.
If you skip the test, the peer technical interview is your first coding round. Prepare for the AI-assisted format there.

Levels.fyi figures for Canva software engineers in Australia, from 491 submissions, read 6 October 2026. Canva uses levels from B1 (entry level) upward, and the total includes stock, which is about a third of the total at B3 and B4. The Australian job ads we read don't post a salary range, but every one lists an equity package among the benefits, so ask for the full split of base and equity when you get an offer. Calibrd benchmarks an offer against your level and location in the report.
How to prepare for a Canva interview
- Read Canva's two engineering blog posts on the AI-Assisted Coding round before anything else. Together they tell you what the interviewer scores and the three ways candidates fall short.
- Ask your recruiter which of your interviews is the AI-assisted one, how long it runs and which tools are allowed.
- Set up your AI-integrated editor and a basic project in your main language before the call, so the first minutes go on the problem.
- Run at least three timed practice sessions on open-ended product problems with your assistant, planning out loud first and reviewing every block it writes.
- Practise answering technical questions yourself before reaching for the AI. Canva's interviewer asks for exactly that.
- If you get an online coding test, practise sets of three problems in 90 minutes in the language the invitation names, without AI.
- Prepare for the 3-hour final: depth in your main language (Java for backend, TypeScript for frontend), one system design at Canva's scale, and your behavioural stories.
- Write five stories in the STARR format (situation, task, action, results, reflection), mapped to Canva's values and its four hiring skills.
- Prepare questions for every interviewer. Canva says the process is a two-way conversation and suggests looking up your interviewers on LinkedIn.
This guide covers Canva's engineering hiring, from Launchpad graduates to staff engineers, mainly in Australia. Canva says its non-engineering roles have a take-home challenge and are encouraged to use AI too, but those loops are not covered here. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
Also interviewing at Figma, Notion or Datadog? Their guides follow the same format, from the first screen to the offer.
