Helsing interview, bring something awesome.

Updated · Sources at the end

Helsing puts one round at the centre of its technical interviews and names it Bring Something Awesome: you present something technical you built and were deeply involved in, and engineers question you on it. It doesn't have to be code. For early-career software engineers, Helsing is piloting a version where the first step is a prerecorded video of up to ten minutes walking through that project, assessed by a Helsing engineer, which it says cuts two full stages from the process.

The rest of the loop is short and written down: a 60-minute deep dive on your project with a systems design discussion, 60 minutes of live coding, and a 30-minute conversation with engineering leadership about mission alignment, collaboration and how you work. Helsing also says why there is no AI help in its interviews: it operates in environments where using LLMs isn't always permitted, so its interviews let engineers succeed on their own thinking. Many roles need a national security clearance, in Germany up to the extended Ü2 or Ü3 level.

01

Who Helsing hires

Helsing builds AI and autonomous systems for European defence, from software to drones, aircraft and underwater vehicles, and raised $1.8 billion at an $18 billion valuation in July 2026. It had about 900 employees in 2025. On 4 October 2026 it had 166 open roles: 36 in AI and engineering, 30 in hardware engineering, 21 in systems architecture and 7 deployed engineers, with titles from junior and early-career software engineers to research engineers in computer vision, reinforcement learning, robotics and AI safety. Most are in Munich and Berlin, then London and Barcelona, with a US team in Washington DC. Postings mention hybrid work for some roles and on-site work for others, and ask that you see ethical considerations as part of engineering.

02

What is the Helsing interview process?

Helsing publishes the round-by-round process for its early-career software roles, in the job ads of September 2026. Other roles add a CV screen and a recruiter screen before the technical rounds; their exact shape is not published.

01
Application and screening
CV, then a recruiter conversation

The standard route for most roles. The early-career pilot replaces both with the video below.

02
Bring Something Awesome video
Prerecorded, up to 10 minutes

A walkthrough of something technically compelling you built, assessed directly by a Helsing engineer. It needn't be code, but it must be technical and something you were deeply involved in.

Early-career pilot
03
Deep dive and systems design
60 minutes

Engineers question your project: why you made each decision, what broke, what you would change. Then a systems design discussion. Expect depth on your own part of the work.

04
Live coding
60 minutes, without AI tools

Code written on your own thinking, which Helsing ties to environments where LLMs are not always permitted. The platform is not published.

05
Final interview
30 minutes with engineering leadership

Mission alignment, collaboration and how you work. Have a clear, honest answer to why you want to build for defence.

06
Security clearance
After the offer, for many roles

German roles ask for the extended security clearance (Ü2 or Ü3, the erweiterte Sicherheitsüberprüfung) or the willingness to obtain it; US roles require citizenship and a SECRET clearance.

03

What Helsing screens for

Helsing's job ads say what it looks for alongside the technical bar.

  • Something technical you built and can explain to the bottom
  • Engineering that works without an AI assistant
  • Mission alignment: a clear view of why you want to work on defence
  • Seeing ethical considerations as part of engineering
  • Collaboration across software, hardware and deployed teams

Helsing interview questions

Drawn from what they say they test

Few candidates have reported Helsing's questions in detail. These are built on the rounds Helsing describes in its own job ads, so an answer you rehearse here is one the loop is designed to ask for.

Behavioural & motivation

  • Walk me through something technical you built that you are proud of.Listening for: What it is · Your part, in depth · What you would change
  • Why do you want to work on defence?Listening for: A real reason · The ethical side · Why Helsing
  • Tell me about a time you worked with people from a different discipline to ship something.Listening for: The gap between you · How you bridged it · The result

Technical

  • Practice: take your project and explain how it would need to change to run on a device with no network connection and one tenth of the memory.Project deep dive: The first technical round: your Bring Something Awesome project, then systems designListening for: Reads the constraints · A concrete redesign · How to check it
  • Practice: design a system that collects sensor data from hundreds of devices in the field, works when connections drop, and syncs when they return.Systems design for the field: Practice in the style of Helsing's work: systems that run on the edge, offline and under strict rulesListening for: Offline first · Integrity and order · Security
  • Practice: implement a function that merges overlapping time intervals from several sensors into one sorted list, and explain its complexity.Live coding without AI: The second technical round, 60 minutesListening for: Correct · Clear code · Complexity

These come from what the company says it tests, and your loop is role-specific. Paste the actual posting and Calibrd predicts the questions for that exact role and level.

Helsing's postings show no salary ranges, only a competitive salary and stock options (VSOP). The UK range is Levels.fyi's software engineer figure for London on 4 October 2026; German pay by level is not public.

How to prepare for a Helsing interview

  1. Choose your Bring Something Awesome project early: technical, yours, and deep enough for an hour of questions.
  2. Rehearse a ten-minute walkthrough of it; the early-career route asks for exactly that as a video.
  3. Practise coding without AI tools, in a plain editor, against a timer.
  4. Prepare an honest answer to why you want to work on defence, and where you stand on its ethics.
  5. Check the clearance line in the posting and whether you can meet it before you apply.

This guide covers Helsing's software, AI research and engineering interviews in Germany, the UK and the US. The round-by-round detail is published for early-career roles; other roles follow the same core rounds after a CV and recruiter screen. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.

Also interviewing at Saronic, Tesla or Booking.com? Their guides follow the same format, from the first screen to the offer.
