bunq interview and assessment test, decoded.
Updated · Sources at the end
bunq doesn't ask for a CV. You fill in a short form, and the first real step is an online test that bunq calls Testing your bunq fit. It is scored by software before any person sees your application, and bunq's own privacy policy says the automated decision rests on the abstract reasoning result and how well you fit the role. Pass it and you take a second test built around situations from the job you applied for. Only then come two 30-minute calls and a full day in the office, the Get Shit Done Day, where you work on a real assignment and present it to your team lead at the end.
That is why people search for the bunq test by name. The fit test is the gate most applicants never get past: bunq told a fintech conference in 2025 that it receives about 20,000 applications a month and invites 1.4% of applicants to the office day. bunq announced Neurolytics as its screening partner in March 2025, and its privacy policy names the Neurolytics scan as the first stage: a scan that records you on webcam while you watch a company video, answer a work preference questionnaire, and race through a 10-minute reasoning section. Candidates who applied earlier describe an abstract reasoning test of shape and number patterns plus a short personality questionnaire, and bunq's policy still names TestGorilla as the platform for its skills, personality and aptitude tests. This guide covers what each part contains, how candidates say it is scored, and how to prepare for it, then the calls and the office day.

Who bunq hires
bunq is a Dutch bank, licensed in the Netherlands and headquartered in Amsterdam, with core offices in Amsterdam, Sofia and Istanbul. It calls itself Europe's second-largest neobank with more than 22 million users, and its job board lists roles in about twenty countries. Most openings are in support and operations, fraud, risk, legal and compliance, but bunq also hires engineers (an iOS developer role in Amsterdam was open in October 2026, asking for Swift, SwiftUI, REST APIs and CI/CD), product owners, and data analysts and scientists, and runs full-time internships. The process is the same seven steps for every role; what changes is the skills test and the office day assignment. bunq says it cares more about curiosity, problem solving and learning speed than prior experience, and it asks applicants to pick the one role that fits them best: applying to several unrelated roles, its FAQ says, signals a lack of focus.
Every bunq candidate takes the same fit test first. The skills test that follows is built for the role, so here is what candidates report it contains for the three tracks this guide covers.
Track · ENG
Engineers
Backend, frontend, iOS and QA roles. A backend engineer on Glassdoor lists the steps as an aptitude test, a behavioural test, a technical assessment test, then a technical assignment in a given framework with set requirements. A test lead describes a coding challenge in an online editor they disliked. A frontend engineer on Reddit reached the Get Shit Done Day in May 2026 as the final step. Glassdoor puts senior software engineer processes among the slowest at bunq, averaging 120 days.
Track · PO
Product owners
bunq's product roles are called product owners. Candidates on Reddit describe the product skills test as general logic and scenario questions taken after the abstract reasoning test, one estimates the assessment at around 40 minutes, and a Glassdoor account of the later calls says most questions were situational: how you handled challenges, how you made decisions, plus salary expectations and relocation.
Track · DATA
Data analysts and scientists
A data scientist on Glassdoor reports a skills test in four parts: a fairly easy Python question, a data science test, a critical thinking test, and an SQLite test with many joins that they could not finish in time. A product data analyst on Reddit found the fit test to be abstract and non-verbal reasoning with nothing technical, and the skills test that followed was about hard skills.
What is the bunq interview process?
bunq publishes its process as seven steps on its careers site and promises to tell you after each one what comes next and when. The details below come from that page, bunq's Get Shit Done Day page and its recruitment privacy policy; anything from candidates is marked as reported. Glassdoor's average across 499 bunq interview reports is 24 days from start to finish, though it varies widely by role.
A few questions about who you are and why you want the job. bunq says it replies within five working days and warns that the email may land in spam. A referral works the same way: one candidate reports the employee who referred them filled in a description instead of a CV.
bunq says there is no right or wrong answer and that the test looks at how you engage with goals and teams, how you prefer to work, and how you solve problems. Its privacy policy is more specific: the Neurolytics scan measures organisational engagement, work preferences, stress and pressure, and cognitive abilities, and the automated decision rests on the abstract reasoning result and fit for the role. Candidates compare it to an IQ test. The section below covers it in detail.
Situations from the job you applied for. bunq's recruiters ask for structured, to-the-point answers and say they value clarity and logic over perfection, and want to see how you approach problems and what you have learned as well as the result. Candidates report coding and framework assignments for engineers, Python, SQL and data tasks for data roles, and logic and scenario questions for product owners.
An overview of bunq, how it works and where you would fit, plus visas, start dates and next steps. bunq invites you to ask anything.
How you work, how you approach challenges and what excites you about the role, and your chance to ask about the team. Reported questions include describing a complex project and your part in its success, and a time you had to learn a new technology quickly.
You receive a role-specific assignment and logins in the morning, check in with a dedicated recruiter, hold a kick-off with your team lead, align with them at midday and get feedback, then give a final presentation. bunq lends you a MacBook and pays for lunch, and there is a coffee chat with a bunqer during the day. It says you won't get step-by-step guidance and should defend your points when challenged.
New hires go through pre-employment screening by a third party, and bunq may ask for a certificate of conduct (VOG) or your country's equivalent.
bunq assessment test: what's on it and how to pass
Each part and how to take itThere are two tests. The first, Testing your bunq fit, is the one candidates call the bunq IQ test. bunq's privacy policy says it uses automated decision-making at this stage, based on the abstract reasoning result and fit for the role, and that a person reviews your application only after you pass. The current version is the Neurolytics scan, which bunq's privacy policy names for the first stage. It needs a laptop with a webcam and records you as you take it. The second, Proving your skills, is built for your role and comes only after the first. Here is each part as Neurolytics, bunq and candidates describe it, and how to take it.
- The company video: The scan opens with a short company video, about two minutes, while your webcam records how engaged you look. Neurolytics says its software analyses your behaviour; no person usually watches it. Sit in good light, face the camera, and watch it properly; there is nothing to answer.
- The work preference questionnaire: About five minutes on how you like to work. Neurolytics tells candidates to answer for the environment they prefer, even if their current job is different. bunq says the fit test has no right or wrong answers. Answer honestly and consistently, and keep in mind that bunq describes itself as fast, demanding, hands-on and built on ownership.
- The 10-minute reasoning section: Neurolytics describes a timed questionnaire of general knowledge, logical, numerical and verbal questions, recorded on camera and scored for ease under pressure. One candidate in May 2026 reports four sections of ten questions with two and a half minutes each, about 15 seconds a question, and that reading carefully made them run out of time on the first section. Practise short timed sets until you can answer at that pace, and never stall on one question: move on and come back if time allows.
- The speaking module, if your scan has one: Neurolytics' speaking module asks two questions, with about a minute to record each answer, and you can re-record as many times as you like before submitting. Prepare a one-minute answer on why bunq and on a time you took ownership, and say it to a camera a few times beforehand.
- The abstract reasoning and personality version: Candidates from 2023 and 2024 describe pattern questions with shapes and numbers, one counting 33 questions in 20 minutes, followed by about 15 two-choice personality questions with no context, such as whether you would rather be precise or honest. bunq still names TestGorilla in its privacy policy, so you may meet this format. For the patterns, learn the usual rules (rotation, count, position, shading) and drill a few dozen questions; one candidate says it becomes quick within a week. For the personality questions, answer as yourself and keep it consistent.
- The skills test: Built around situations from your role. Candidates report coding and an assignment in a given framework for engineers; Python, data science, critical thinking and SQL with joins for data roles; logic and scenario questions for product owners. bunq's recruiters say to keep answers structured and short, that they value clarity and logic over perfection, and that they want to see how you approached the problem. For timed sections, finish a working answer first and polish after.
- If you don't pass: One candidate's rejection email, received the next day, said they could retake the test after at least three months; another waited two weeks for a reply. bunq's privacy policy gives you the right to ask for a manual review of the automated part of the assessment and to have your data corrected, through the link in your application confirmation email.
Neurolytics says the scan can't be taken on a phone or tablet and can't be retaken unless your data could not be analysed, so check your laptop, camera and connection before you open the link. Do it rested and in one sitting.
What bunq screens for
bunq publishes what it looks for in more detail than most companies: a list of green flags, a list of red flags that it says end a candidacy, five personality traits, and five working rules it asks you to show on the office day.
- No ego: bunq lists getting defensive or showing ego when challenged or given feedback as a red flag that kills a candidacy
- Real, specific answers: vague or scripted answers are on the same red flag list, and the recruiters' tips say to use real examples
- A personal link to the mission, such as trouble opening a bank account abroad, which bunq names as a green flag
- Ownership with little hand-holding: bunq asks applicants whether they are ready for a fast-paced, high-ownership workplace
- Analytical and structured: bunq says it validates assumptions with data and wants clear goals, metrics and written communication

bunq doesn't publish salary bands on the job ads we read. Its careers site says pay is benchmarked against the top 5% of the industry, with a bonus based on the impact you make, and the iOS job ad lists a 40-hour week, a €1,500 learning budget, an optional pension plan with a monthly bunq contribution, and travel, phone and internet allowances. The Levels.fyi figures are total pay, read on 6 October 2026, and the median engineering package shown there is base salary only, with no stock or bonus. One candidate on Reddit says bunq's offer came in at the bottom of the advertised range with no explanation and no negotiation; treat that as a single account. Calibrd benchmarks the offer against your level and location in the report.
How to prepare for a bunq interview
- Read bunq's How we hire and Get Shit Done Day pages before you apply. The green flags, red flags and five working rules on them are what the calls and the office day score.
- Apply to one role that fits. bunq says applying to several unrelated roles signals a lack of focus, and the fit test is tied to the role.
- Use a laptop with a working webcam for the fit test. The scan won't run on a phone or tablet and can't be retaken.
- Practise timed reasoning before the link arrives: number sequences, short true, false or can't tell statements, odd-one-out words and shape patterns. Aim for about 15 seconds a question.
- Answer the work preference and personality questions for the way you like to work, honestly and consistently. bunq says there are no right answers.
- For the skills test, write structured, short answers and show your reasoning. bunq's recruiters value clarity and logic over a perfect result.
- Download the bunq app and go through sign-up and a payment. bunq recommends it, and it gives you real material for the team lead call and the office day.
- Prepare one true story for each red flag bunq lists: taking critical feedback, a specific result, and why bunq, ideally with a personal banking experience behind it.
- Plan a full day off for the Get Shit Done Day, in a bunq office. Set yourself a time to stop building so the final presentation gets the attention it needs.
- Bring questions about how bunq works that go beyond its website. bunq lists thoughtful, curious questions as a green flag.
This guide covers bunq's hiring for engineering, product and data roles. Support, operations and compliance roles take the same fit test, with a skills test of their own. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
