Thales interview process, from the video interview to the assessment centre.
Updated · Sources at the end
Thales runs two kinds of interview process. For UK graduates, its own job ads list the steps: an online application, online tests, a video interview, and then a virtual assessment centre that may include a presentation, a group exercise and competency-based interviews. Candidates describe the assessment centre as a group task plus two interviews, one on competencies and one technical. In France, Thales says you interview with the recruiter and with the manager of the role, and candidates report a technical interview with the manager lasting an hour to an hour and a half.
Thales is a French group working in defence, aerospace and space, and cyber and digital. On 3 March 2026 it reported 2025 sales of €22.1 billion, up 7.6%, and orders of €25.3 billion. It has about 85,000 employees in 65 countries, and in February 2026 it said it planned to hire more than 9,000 people in 2026, after 8,800 in 2025. Many roles touch defence work, so UK roles need security clearance and some French roles need a defence clearance called habilitation.

Who Thales hires
About 40% of Thales's 2026 hires go to engineering (software, systems, cybersecurity, AI and data) and 25% to industry roles such as technicians and operators. On 5 October 2026 its careers site listed 2,652 open roles, 1,529 of them in France and 172 in the UK, with software the second-largest category after industry. Defence is the largest segment, with €12.2 billion of 2025 sales, ahead of aerospace at €5.9 billion and cyber and digital at €3.9 billion. Thales has about 42,000 staff in France across 44 sites and more than 7,500 in the UK. Engineering ads in France ask for an engineering degree or a master's; UK graduate ads ask for a STEM degree with little or no professional experience.
Thales hires in two very different ways. UK graduates and apprentices go through a fixed early-careers process with online tests, a video interview and a virtual assessment centre. In France, most hiring goes through a recruiter and then the hiring manager, with a technical interview in the middle.
Track · UK graduate
UK graduate programme
Thales UK runs a three-year Engineering Development Programme, accredited by the IET, IMechE and RAeS, with the option to rotate in year three. You register once, then apply for one main role and up to three more. The process is online tests, a video interview, then a virtual assessment centre. For the September 2027 intake, applications close on 6 January 2027 and assessment centres run from February to May 2027.
Track · UK apprentice
UK apprentices
Apprentices go through the same Future Talent process as graduates, according to Thales's graduate ads. A candidate for a degree apprenticeship in 2026 reported a competency interview with follow-up questions in April.
Track · France
Engineers in France
Thales says a recruiter screens your application, then you interview with the recruiter and with the hiring manager, in one or several steps depending on the role. Candidates report a technical interview with the manager or an engineer, sometimes a short technical test, and an HR interview.
Track · Students
Interns, apprentices and VIE in France
Thales takes in about 3,500 interns and work-study apprentices a year in France, and also offers VIE posts abroad. For 2026 it planned 1,700 interns and 1,600 apprentices. Intern candidates report a technical interview of about an hour with the future tutor, then an HR interview.
What is the Thales interview process?
The UK graduate steps come from Thales's own ads for the 2027 intake, posted in October 2026. The French steps come from Thales's French careers page. Details marked as reported come from candidates on Glassdoor, The Student Room and Reddit, and from prep sites, read on 5 October 2026.
UK graduates pick one main role and up to three more. In France, a recruiter checks your CV against the role and may suggest other openings.
Thales calls them online assessments of your suitability for the role and does not name the provider. Prep sites report numerical and logical reasoning tests, with a technical test for some roles.
UK graduates and apprenticesOnly candidates who pass the tests get it. Reported questions are about why Thales, why the role, and how you solved a hard problem or handled feedback.
UK graduates and apprenticesThales says it may include presentations, group exercises and competency-based interviews. Candidates report a group task, a competency interview and a technical interview. The section below goes through each part.
UK graduates and apprenticesA quick check of your background, your availability and your interest in the role.
FranceQuestions tied to the job ad, your past projects, and for recent graduates your final-year thesis or internship. Some candidates report a separate technical interview with an engineer, or a short coding test in Java or Python.
FranceMotivation, salary and fit. For management-grade roles, prep sites report a final sign-off interview higher up.
FranceUK roles need BPSS screening and SC clearance before you start. In France, a role that touches classified defence information starts a habilitation procedure for the person hired.
Thales video interview and virtual assessment centre
From Thales's job ads and candidate reportsFor UK graduates and apprentices, Thales's own ads say candidates who pass the online tests are invited to a video interview, and those who progress from it attend a virtual assessment centre. Thales says the assessment centre may include presentations, group exercises and competency-based interviews. Candidates describe the day as a group task plus two separate interviews, one on competencies and one technical. For the 2027 intake, assessment centres run from February to May 2027.
- The online tests: Thales does not name the provider. Prep sites report numerical and logical reasoning tests, with a technical test for some roles. Practise timed questions and read the invitation email for the exact tests.
- The video interview: You record answers to set questions. Reported themes: why Thales, why this role, a hard problem you solved, and how you take feedback. Give each answer a clear situation, your action and the result, and keep it within the time.
- The presentation: Reported as part of some assessment centres, sometimes prepared as a group. Keep to the time, give one clear recommendation, and be ready for questions.
- The group exercise: Assessors watch how you work with others more than whether the group finds the perfect answer. Listen, build on other people's ideas, keep track of time, and help the group reach a decision.
- The competency interview: Candidates report follow-up questions on each example. Prepare five or six stories, such as teamwork, a hard problem, feedback and a mistake, and know each in detail.
- The technical interview: Reported as a separate interview on the discipline of the role, often starting from your degree and projects. A graduate machine learning candidate said the follow-up questions were especially hard in the technical interview. Know your final-year project inside out.
Calibrd can rehearse the video interview questions and the competency and technical interviews aloud, with follow-up questions. It cannot run the timed tests or the group exercise.
What Thales screens for
Thales sums up its purpose as building a future we can all trust, and its about page explains that trust depends on security, ethics and responsible technology. In interviews this shows up as:
- Rigour: following proven methods and documenting your work, because people's safety can depend on it
- Trust and discretion around sensitive customers and information
- Keeping people in control of the systems you build, which Thales calls trusted AI
- Working well in a team, which the assessment centre group task tests directly
- Comfort with defence work and with the security checks that come with it

How to prepare for a Thales interview
- Check the security rules before you apply: UK graduate roles need the permanent right to work in the UK and, typically, five years of continuous UK residence for SC clearance.
- Practise timed numerical and logical reasoning tests, then read your invitation email for the exact tests.
- Prepare five or six competency stories and say each one aloud, ready for follow-up questions.
- Know your final-year project or internship in depth: the problem, your choices, your tests and the limits.
- For the group exercise, practise listening, summarising and moving the group to a decision.
- In France, read the job ad line by line: candidates say the technical questions follow it closely.
- If the ad mentions habilitation, ask the recruiter early how long the procedure usually takes for that role.
- Have an honest answer ready on why you want to work for a defence and aerospace company.
This guide covers Thales's graduate and apprentice hiring in the UK and its engineering, intern and apprentice hiring in France. Other countries and business units can run a different process. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
