Careem interview, from the HackerRank test to the bar raiser.
Updated · Sources at the end
Careem's engineering loop opens with a timed HackerRank test, about two hours of coding problems and multiple choice questions. Candidates who pass describe a Virtual Hiring Day: up to four interviews of about an hour each, on algorithms, problem solving, system design and a conversation with an engineering manager. Then comes a bar raiser, a shorter interview on Careem's values, often a week later. Senior candidates report system design prompts built around maps and location, which makes sense for a company that started as a ride-hailing app.
Careem was founded in Dubai in 2012 and calls itself the Everything App for the greater Middle East. Its job ads say it has served more than 70 million customers and 2.5 million Captains, its name for drivers, in more than 70 cities across 10 countries from Morocco to Pakistan. The ride-hailing business has belonged to Uber since 2020. The rest of the app, from food and groceries to Careem Pay, sits in Careem Technologies, where e& bought 50.03% for $400 million in 2023. In June 2026 Uber agreed to buy 12.5% back from e& for $100 million, taking control again and leaving e& with 37.53%.
Read the hiring market before you prepare. In May 2026 Careem closed its Berlin engineering office and cut staff across the UAE, Jordan, Egypt and Pakistan, after leaving ride-hailing in Pakistan in 2025 and pausing most consumer services in Saudi Arabia. It reported an operating loss of $122 million for the first half of 2026. On 16 October 2026 its board had 14 open jobs, three of them in engineering or data science.

Who Careem hires
Careem hires backend, mobile, data and machine learning engineers, and data scientists. Its backend stack, in its own ads, is Java and Spring Boot microservices on AWS with SQL and NoSQL databases. Junior engineers come through the NextGen programme, a one-year graduate scheme Careem runs in Pakistan, Jordan and Egypt; the two engineering ads open in October 2026 are NextGen backend roles in Karachi and Lahore, one for fresh graduates and one asking for two to four years. In Dubai the open technical role is a Senior Data Scientist on personalization, building recommendation and ranking across Food, Quik and Shops, with two to four years in recommendation or search listed as a must. Every 2026 ad says Careem is looking for AI talent: people who apply AI to build tools and automate work.

Experienced engineers
The HackerRank test, a screen, then the Virtual Hiring Day or a set of technical rounds, a hiring manager and a bar raiser. At senior and staff level the technical rounds lean toward design: candidates report one low-level design, two high-level designs, and only one coding round.
Track · NextGen
NextGen graduate programme
Careem's one-year scheme for junior engineers in Pakistan, Jordan and Egypt, across backend, frontend, mobile, data, MLOps, infrastructure, security and QA. The ads ask for object-oriented design, data structures and algorithms, clean code and SOLID principles. Candidates describe an online coding test, technical interviews and a hiring manager round.

Data science
A phone screen on machine learning, Python and SQL, and for senior roles a HackerRank test that candidates say covers maths, probability, statistics, information theory, coding and SQL. Candidates also report a presentation round.
What is the Careem interview process?
Careem does not publish its interview process. The shape below comes from candidate reports on Glassdoor between 2022 and 2026, seen in search snippets, and it varies by team and level. Candidates on Glassdoor report the whole process taking about a month on average, and some say two weeks from first call to last interview.
Your background, your salary expectations, your notice period and, for Dubai roles, whether you would relocate. Some candidates sit the HackerRank test before this call.
Three coding problems, reported as two at LeetCode easy level and one at medium, plus multiple choice questions. Candidates say the multiple choice wording is vague. The section below goes through it.
You get a small project before the interview and refactor it while talking it through with the interviewer. Talk through each change and why it makes the code easier to read or test.
Some teams, reported for mobileCandidates list algorithms and data structures, problem solving, system design, and an engineering manager interview. Other loops split the same content over separate days: two coding interviews and a technical hiring manager round.
A low-level design of a class or API, then high-level designs that candidates say are mostly about location: nearby places, ride-hailing search and matching. The design section below has the reported prompts.
Senior and staffBehavioural questions on Careem's values: how you start things, how you give feedback, how your teammates would describe you, and what ownership means to you. Candidates describe it as a check on whether you are a team player and a high performer.
Some candidates report a culture-fit interview with people management and a meeting with the team lead before the offer.
Careem HackerRank test: what is on it and how to pass
Reported problems and how to solve themThe Careem HackerRank test is the first technical step for most engineering roles. Candidates on Glassdoor, seen in search snippets, describe about two hours with three coding problems, two at LeetCode easy level and one at medium, plus a set of multiple choice questions. Senior data science candidates report a different test covering maths, probability, statistics, coding and SQL. The problems rotate, so the patterns below matter more than any single question.
- The easy problems: one pass over an array or string: Reported examples include counting the buildings that receive sunlight, checking whether two strings are anagrams, and finding the longest run of ones. Each has a single-pass answer with a running value or a count map. Write it cleanly, then test the empty input and the single element before you submit.
- The medium problem: pick the right structure: Top K frequent elements is the reported example. Count with a hash map, then select with a heap of size k or with buckets by frequency. Most of the marks are in choosing the structure, so say why in a comment if the test allows it.
- The multiple choice questions: Candidates say the wording is vague. Read each one twice, answer what is literally asked, and don't spend more than a minute or two on any of them; the coding problems are worth more of your time.
- Budget the two hours: Our suggestion: do the two easy problems first, in about 20 minutes each, so you have a full hour for the medium one and the multiple choice. A passing easy solution is worth more than a half-finished medium one.
- Pick your strongest language: Careem's backend runs on Java, but candidates don't report a language requirement on the test. Use the one you write fastest and most correctly under a timer.
Formats change by team and level. Ask your recruiter how long the test is, how many problems it has, and whether multiple choice is included.
The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at Careem.
Predict my Careem questions →Careem system design interview: the location prompts
Reported prompts and how to take eachSenior and staff candidates report that Careem's design rounds lean on maps and location, which is the core of a ride-hailing and delivery app. A staff candidate in December 2025 described two design rounds, mostly on geolocation, and a senior candidate in Dubai in July 2025 described one low-level and two high-level designs. These are the prompts candidates name, seen in search snippets.
- A Yelp-like service to find nearby places: Start with the read path: a user's location in, the nearest places out. Index places with geohash or a quadtree, query the cell and its neighbours, then rank by distance and rating. Places change rarely, so cache heavily and say how you would update the index.
- A ride-hailing service, with a focus on search: The hard part is drivers who move every few seconds. Keep live locations in memory keyed by cell, expire stale ones, and search outward from the rider's cell until you have enough candidates. Then talk through offering the trip, timeouts and making sure one driver never gets two trips.
- A Twitter class, as low-level design: Model users, follows and tweets with timestamps, and build the feed by merging followed users' recent tweets with a heap. Keep the interface small and say what you would test.
- A catalogue API: Candidates mention it without detail. For a food or grocery catalogue, cover the data model (items, variants, prices per store), reads far outnumbering writes, search and filtering, and how price and stock changes reach the app quickly.
Careem works across many cities with uneven connectivity. Saying how your design behaves on a slow or dropped mobile connection is a fair way to show you thought about its users.
What Careem screens for
Careem published version 4.0 of its values in September 2022, and its 2026 ads add a shorter list: bold, focused, agile and collaborative. The bar raiser draws on both.
- Owners, not employees: Careem's values ask you to solve for Careem, speak up and take initiative, own things to the finish line, and be frugal with company resources
- To the moon and beyond: ambition in your own area, and bold bets that sometimes fail
- Every experience matters: for customers, Captains and partners alike
- Committed to developing each other: giving and taking feedback, which the bar raiser asks about directly
- Responsible for our communities: the region Careem serves, where transaction values are small and margins are low
- Building a lasting institution: decisions that hold up for years

This guide covers Careem's engineering hiring, the NextGen graduate programme and its data science loop. Careem's job ads publish no pay, so there are no pay ranges here; ask the recruiter for the range on the first call. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
