JPMorgan Chase interview, from HackerRank to HireVue.

Updated · Sources at the end

JPMorgan Chase hires most of its early-career engineers through one scheme, the Software Engineer Program, and every 2027 posting for it starts the same way. After you apply, you get an email with a HackerRank coding challenge, and the posting says your application will not be looked at again until you finish it. Next comes a recorded video interview. JPMorgan's careers FAQ calls it an on-demand interview where questions appear on screen and you record your answers; candidates call it the HireVue, and in 2026 they reported two behavioural questions with about 30 seconds to prepare and two minutes to answer each. What follows depends on where you applied: a virtual Superday for the UK internship, and in the US a two-day hackathon called Code for Good.

01

Who JPMorgan Chase hires

JPMorgan's 2027 technology postings cover the Software Engineer Program as a full-time role in the United States (Chicago, Columbus, Houston, Jersey City, New York, Palo Alto, Plano, Tampa and Wilmington, with February and July starts), Dublin, Glasgow, London and Singapore, and as a summer internship in Dublin, Glasgow, London, Singapore and, through Code for Good, the US. A separate Data & AI Program hires interns and graduates in the US, London, Glasgow and Singapore. The 2027 postings also say that experience with AI coding tools, and checking and fixing what they produce, will set you apart.

The first two steps are the same everywhere. After the recorded interview, the route depends on the program and the country, so check which one your posting describes.

  • Track · SEP FT

    Software Engineer Program, full-time

For graduates. Application, the HackerRank coding challenge, the recorded video interview, then live interviews. JPMorgan says it fills these classes on a rolling basis, so applying early matters. Candidates in India reported in August 2026 that the 2027 full-time program there was cancelled after they had done the coding test and the HireVue.

  • Track · SEP Intern

    Software Engineer Program, summer internship

In the UK the posting describes HackerRank, then an email invitation to a virtual Superday. In the US the only 2027 internship route is Code for Good: you apply, take the HackerRank challenge, and if invited spend two days building a project for a nonprofit with a team, which can lead to an internship offer.

  • Track · DATA

    Data & AI Program

Interns and full-time graduates in data science and machine learning, in the US, London, Glasgow and Singapore. The postings follow the same application and assessment pattern as the Software Engineer Program.

02

What is the JPMorgan Chase interview process?

JPMorgan publishes the first steps in each posting and the kinds of assessment in its careers FAQ. The format of the recorded interview and the questions in it come from candidates and are marked as reported. The most common complaint is waiting: candidates describe weeks or months of silence after the HireVue with no rejection or update.

01
Application
Online application to one program and location

JPMorgan fills its classes on a rolling basis, so an early application has more open places. Its FAQ recommends applying to no more than three summer internship programs.

02
HackerRank coding challenge
Online coding test, sent by email

Every 2027 Software Engineer Program posting says the challenge is required and that your application will not be considered further until you complete it. JPMorgan does not publish the number of problems or the time limit.

03
Recorded video interview (HireVue)
On-demand: questions on screen, you record your answers

JPMorgan's FAQ describes it as interviewing technology that presents questions and records your responses. In 2026 candidates reported two behavioural questions drawn from a pool of about eight, around 30 seconds to prepare and up to two minutes to answer each, and nothing technical. The FAQ also says many assessments can't be retaken for a set period.

04
Code for Good hackathon
Two days, Friday and Saturday, in a team

You and your team build a technology solution for a nonprofit, and the event can lead to an offer for the 2027 internship. The 2026 US events were in Brooklyn on 16 and 17 October (applications closed 18 September) and Columbus on 6 and 7 November (applications close 9 October). Code for Good also runs in Argentina, India, Singapore and the UK.

US summer internship
05
Superday
Live interviews, virtual for the UK internship

The UK internship posting says that if you progress you'll get an email invitation to a virtual Superday. JPMorgan's FAQ says its assessments include structured live interviews; it does not describe what each one covers.

03

JPMorgan HireVue questions and how to answer them

Reported questions and how to answer them

JPMorgan's careers FAQ describes the recorded stage as an on-demand interview: questions appear on screen and you record your answers. Candidates who took it in 2026 reported two questions from a pool of about eight, around 30 seconds to think and up to two minutes to answer each, and nothing technical. Whether you can re-record is not confirmed: one thread asks whether candidates who used retries were rejected, and JPMorgan's FAQ says many assessments can't be retaken for a set period. Plan for one take. These are the questions candidates quoted, from the 2026 India campus cycle; the US pool may differ.

  • Tell me about a time you had to simplify a large amount of information to communicate a few key ideas to a co-worker.: Pick one real case with a lot of detail, such as a report, a dataset or a codebase. Say who needed it and why, what you cut, the two or three ideas you kept, how you presented them, and what the person could do afterwards. That fills two minutes without padding.
  • Imagine you had to present complex information to someone with limited knowledge of the subject. What steps would you take?: This one is hypothetical, so answer in steps: find out what they already know and what they need to decide, start with the conclusion, use one example or comparison, check they followed, then offer the detail. Close with a short real example where you did this.
  • Tell me about a time you recognised a gap in your skills or knowledge.: Choose a real gap that mattered to a piece of work. A strength dressed up as a weakness won't convince anyone. Spend most of the time on what you did to close it, then show it closed: something you built or delivered with the new skill.
  • Tell me about a time you were not able to fully honour a work or school commitment you had made.: Own your share plainly. The part they listen for is what you did once you knew it would slip: who you told, how early, and what you did to limit the damage. End with what you do differently now.
  • Tell me about a time you had to work with someone whose way of working was different from yours.: Describe the difference without blaming the other person. Explain how you found a way to work together, such as agreeing who owned what or changing how you communicated, and what the shared result was.
  • Tell me about a time you solved a new problem by using knowledge from a previous experience.: Make the link explicit: name the earlier experience, the new problem, and exactly what carried over. A technical example works well here, such as reusing a debugging approach from a class project at an internship.
  • The format, and what goes wrong: With about 30 seconds to think, decide your example first and your ending second, then speak. The common failure in recorded interviews is a short answer that stops after a minute, leaving the reviewer with little. Record yourself on a phone with a two-minute timer before the real one, and check the camera, sound and light.

Some candidates say the HireVue and the HackerRank challenge are judged independently. JPMorgan hasn't confirmed this, so treat both as if they count.

What JPMorgan Chase screens for

The recorded questions candidates reported in 2026 keep returning to the same few things, and the 2027 postings add one more.

  • Explaining something complex simply. Two of the reported questions ask how you made a lot of information clear to someone with less background
  • Working with people unlike you. Candidates were asked about a colleague whose way of working differed from theirs
  • Owning your gaps and commitments. Reported questions ask about a gap in your skills and a commitment you couldn't keep
  • Reusing what you know. One question asks how earlier experience helped you solve a new problem
  • Using AI tools with judgment. The 2027 postings say experience with AI coding tools, and checking and refining what they produce, will set you apart

How to prepare for a JPMorgan Chase interview

  1. Apply early. JPMorgan fills its program classes on a rolling basis, and its FAQ suggests applying to no more than three summer internship programs.
  2. Do the HackerRank challenge as soon as it arrives. The posting says your application won't move until it's done, so a late test is a lost place.
  3. Practise timed coding problems on arrays, strings, hash maps and sorting before the challenge, under a clock, in the language you know best.
  4. Prepare one true story for each reported HireVue theme: simplifying information, a gap in your skills, a commitment you missed, a colleague who worked differently, and reusing past knowledge.
  5. Record yourself answering two of those questions with 30 seconds to think and a two-minute timer, then watch it back. Aim to use most of the two minutes.
  6. Treat the HireVue as one take. Whether retries exist is unconfirmed, and JPMorgan says many assessments can't be retaken for a while.
  7. In the US, check the Code for Good dates and deadlines for your nearest event: it's the 2027 internship route, and the Columbus deadline is 9 October 2026.
  8. Expect to wait. Candidates report weeks or months of silence after the HireVue, so keep applying elsewhere while you wait.
  9. Be ready to talk about how you use AI coding tools and how you check their output. The 2027 postings name it as an advantage.

This guide covers JPMorgan Chase's early-career technology hiring: the Software Engineer Program and the Data & AI Program. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
