BAE Systems graduate interview, from the HireVue games to the final round.
Updated · Sources at the end
BAE Systems hires UK graduates and degree apprentices through the same few stages: a short online application, an online assessment with game-style tasks and an on-demand video interview, then a competency-based interview, either online or in person. BAE's own careers FAQ adds that the process can include "sometimes an assessment centre", and candidates on some schemes still report one. Before any of that, your nationality, your place of birth and how long you have lived in the UK decide which roles you can take, because most work here needs security vetting.
BAE Systems reported record sales of £30.7 billion for 2025 on 18 February 2026, with an order backlog of £83.6 billion. It says it recruited more than 2,500 early careers employees in 2025 and had a record 6,800 apprentices, graduates and undergraduates in training in the UK. Its UK team is more than 35,000 people across over 50 sites.

Who BAE Systems hires
In the UK, BAE Systems hires graduates into Engineering, Technology and Business Services, and degree apprentices into the same three families, from aerospace, naval, nuclear and manufacturing engineering to software engineering, cyber and data. Graduate engineering roles are listed at sites including Warton and Samlesbury, Brough, Prestwick, Rochester, Glascoed, Frimley and Preston. Technology hiring also covers BAE Systems Digital Intelligence. In the US, BAE Systems, Inc. hires separately through its own job site, and its candidates report their own process.
BAE Systems runs most of its UK early careers hiring through one central team, and the stages are much the same across its graduate, degree apprenticeship and placement routes. What changes is who can apply, when the window opens and what the final round looks like.
Track · Graduate
Graduate programmes
Engineering, Technology and Business Services schemes of 18 to 30 months, non-rotational, starting with a two-week induction. BAE asks for at least a 2:2 in a related subject. The main window opens at the start of September, and roles can close early.
Track · Degree apprentice
Degree apprenticeships
Level 6 programmes of about five years that end in an honours degree, in subjects from aerospace and naval architecture to cyber and software engineering. BAE asks for five GCSEs including maths and English and 240/96 UCAS points in England and Wales. The 2027 window opens in January.
Track · Placement
Industrial placements and summer internships
A one-year placement or a 12-week summer internship for undergraduates. The 2026 roles are closed and BAE says they reopen in September. A placement can lead to a graduate offer.
Track · Technology
Software, cyber and data
Software engineer, cyber security, data analyst, DevOps, cloud and systems engineer roles sit on the Technology graduate track and the degree apprenticeships. Some of them sit in BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, the cyber and intelligence business. Candidates report a few technical questions in the final interview alongside the competency ones.
What is the BAE Systems interview process?
BAE's 2026 pages for graduate engineering, graduate technology and degree apprenticeships each list the same stages, set out below. The detail on the assessment and the interviews comes from candidate reports, marked as reported. The early careers team also says you may apply for only one role a year, so choose carefully.
Your education, your eligibility and your choice of role and site. BAE says popular programmes can close without notice once enough people apply, so apply early in the window. Questions on nationality, residency and right to work come up here because they decide whether you can be vetted.
BAE calls it an online assessment with interactive activities and an on-demand video interview. Candidates report three short games and about five recorded questions, with time to think and the option to re-record. Prep sites also report SHL numerical and verbal reasoning tests on some routes. The section below covers each part.
Reported as a check on your motivation, your eligibility for security clearance and your availability. Have your residency history ready.
BAE's stated final round. Candidates report about four competency questions built around BAE's values and behaviours, and on technology roles a few technical questions on your degree and projects.
BAE's FAQ says the process includes "sometimes an assessment centre". Candidates on the 2026 graduate intake report an assessment centre and say knowing the values and behaviours was the key. Prep sites describe a presentation, a group exercise and a final interview. Your invitation will say which format you are getting.
Some schemes and businessesEvery role needs at least the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, and many need a higher level of National Security Vetting. The offer depends on passing it, and higher levels take longer.
BAE Systems online assessment, video interview and assessment centre
From BAE's own pages and candidate reportsBAE describes its online assessment as interactive activities plus an on-demand video interview, done from home. Candidates name HireVue as the platform. Whether an assessment centre follows depends on the scheme and the business: BAE's 2026 graduate and degree apprenticeship pages end with a competency-based interview, its FAQ says "sometimes an assessment centre", and candidates on some 2026 graduate schemes report one. One prep site, Practice Aptitude Tests, wrote in March 2025 that BAE no longer holds assessment centres, which other candidate reports contradict.
- The game-based tasks: Candidates report three short games in the HireVue assessment, done after the recorded questions. Read each set of instructions fully, play on a laptop in a quiet room, and move on calmly after a mistake.
- SHL reasoning tests, on some routes: Prep sites report SHL numerical and verbal reasoning tests, with about 12 numerical questions in 17 minutes and about 30 verbal ones in under 20. BAE's own pages do not name them, so they may not appear on your route. Practise reading tables and percentages quickly.
- The on-demand video interview: Candidates report about five recorded questions, with time to think and the chance to re-record a couple of times. Expect motivation and competency questions. Answer each with one real example, your own actions and the result, in about two minutes.
- The competency-based interview: Candidates report about four competency questions, plus a few technical ones for technology roles. Prepare a story for each of Trusted, Innovative and Bold, and one for teamwork under change.
- The assessment centre, where there is one: Prep sites describe a short presentation with questions, a group exercise and a final interview. In the group task, help the group reach an answer and bring quieter people in. Candidates say knowing BAE's values and behaviours was what mattered most.
Calibrd cannot rehearse the games or the reasoning tests. It can rehearse the video interview and the competency interview with you aloud, including the questions an assessment centre interviewer asks.
What BAE Systems screens for
BAE Systems names three values, Trusted, Innovative and Bold, and eight behaviours that put them into practice. Candidates say knowing them is what the final round turns on. In an early careers interview they look like this:
- Trusted: doing what you said you would, and doing the right thing when nobody is checking
- Innovative: curiosity, learning from failure as well as success, and turning an idea into something real
- Bold: speaking up, stepping forward and taking an opportunity when you see one
- Collaboration: getting a result through teamwork on a long, multi-discipline programme
- Adaptability: responding to change with positive action

All three figures are BAE's own, from its UK early careers pages read on 5 October 2026. The graduate page also offers an optional 20% salary advance. One BAE page gives the undergraduate rate as £24,300 pro rata and another as £25,900; check the figure on your offer.
How to prepare for a BAE Systems interview
- Check your eligibility first: BAE says many roles need 5 to 10 years of continuous UK residency, and nationality and place of birth can restrict roles.
- Apply early in the window. Graduate roles open at the start of September, apprenticeships in January, and popular programmes close early.
- Pick your one role carefully, because BAE allows one application a year.
- Do the online assessment on a laptop in a quiet room, and give each game a fresh start.
- Prepare a story for each value, Trusted, Innovative and Bold, and practise saying each in two minutes.
- Technology candidates: be ready to explain your best project in depth and answer a few basic technical questions.
- If you get an assessment centre, plan a short, clear presentation and practise helping a group reach a decision.
- Have your address history for the last five to ten years ready for vetting after the offer.
This guide covers BAE Systems' UK graduate, degree apprenticeship and placement hiring, with a short note on the US business, which hires separately. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
