Synthesia interview, decoded.

Synthesia writes its engineering loop into every ad and says it can be done in two weeks: a recruiter call, an hour on what you have delivered, a practical round with one of its engineers, a system design discussion built on problems it has had in production, and a leadership retrospective. The practical round is the one to prepare for. For backend and ML roles it is called the Work Scenario round, 75 to 90 minutes of hands-on problem solving that the ads describe as not LeetCode style, with AI-assisted coding welcome.

Synthesia makes AI video with realistic avatars and voices, used by 90% of the Fortune 100. It was founded in London in 2017 and raised a $200M Series E led by GV at a $4B valuation in January 2026.

Who Synthesia hires

Different tracks, one bar

Synthesia's open engineering roles are senior. Research and development hires research engineers for video generation, interactive avatars, multimodal models and data, and an ML platform engineer, mostly remote across Europe. Engineering hires a principal or staff software engineer in Seattle, a machine learning engineer for its Roleplay Sessions product, and security and engineering management roles. Most European roles can be in the London office or remote from the UK, Germany, Switzerland or Ireland, and are employment only, usually through OysterHR.

The ads describe the same five steps for most engineering roles; the practical round changes shape with the job.

  • Track · SWE & ML

    Software and ML engineering

Recruiter, the delivery and impact interview, then the Work Scenario round for backend and ML roles or a live coding round for the staff software engineer, both collaborative and AI-assisted, then system design and the leadership retrospective. Glassdoor reports from ML engineers describe an earlier format: an eight-hour timed take-home on a cloud GPU Synthesia provided.

  • Track · Frontend

    Frontend engineering

Recruiter, 45 minutes with the head of the team on your past projects, a 75-minute exercise where you are handed a real Figma section spec and work out with an engineer how to model and build it, then leadership.

  • Track · Leadership

    Engineering management

Five calls with senior engineering stakeholders: people management, technical leadership, programme management, cross-functional strategy and leadership, over two to three weeks.

What is the Synthesia interview process?

Round by round

The stages below are Synthesia's own, from its engineering ads published between August and September 2026. Glassdoor candidates report about three weeks on average, and describe take-homes that the current ads have replaced with live rounds, so check the format with your recruiter.

01
Tech recruiter interview
30 to 40 minutes

Your technical background, previous experience and what you are looking for next, plus where you would work: London, remote in a handful of European countries, or Seattle for the US role.

02
Delivery and impact interview
60 minutes

A deep dive into your past projects: what you shipped, the impact, and how you work.

03
Work Scenario round
75 to 90 minutes, with one of Synthesia's engineers

Hands-on problem solving, not LeetCode style. It is a collaboration exercise, and AI-assisted coding is welcome. The staff software engineer ad calls the same slot a live coding interview; frontend candidates get a real Figma spec to model and build.

04
System design discussion
60 minutes

Real architectural problems Synthesia has faced in production. For a company that renders video from text at scale, expect generation queues, GPU capacity and long-running jobs to be fair ground.

05
Leadership retrospective
45 to 60 minutes

Examples of collaboration and growth. Your future manager or the VP of Engineering also outlines the role and what is ahead.

06
Debrief
Internal

Synthesia's side only; it ends in an offer or the end of the process.

03

What Synthesia screens for

What every round is really testing

The loop itself says what Synthesia values: delivery you can show, working with others on a real problem, and fluency with AI tools.

  • Delivery and impact you can walk through in detail
  • Collaboration during the problem, with an engineer beside you
  • Using AI tools well, openly allowed in the practical round
  • Product focus: the ML role is described as applied, for a product developer
  • Senior ownership: most open roles are staff, principal or senior

Synthesia interview questions

Drawn from the job ads

Candidates have not published Synthesia's Work Scenario problems. The questions below come from what the ads say each stage covers.

Behavioural & motivation

  • Walk me through a project you delivered: the impact, and how you worked with others to get there.
  • Tell me about a time you grew as an engineer, and what changed in how you work.
  • Give an example of collaborating across teams on something that was hard to agree on.
  • Why Synthesia?

Technical

  • Practical problem solving: A real task worked through with an engineer, with AI-assisted coding
  • Production system design: Architectural problems Synthesia has had in production
  • Applied ML for a product: For Roleplay Sessions: scoring what a learner says, generating feedback in real time, deciding the avatar's next move
  • Video and data at scale: Research roles work with more than a million hours of video and audio
  • Frontend from a design spec: Modelling and building a real Figma section with an engineer

These come from the job ads, and your loop is role-specific. Paste the actual posting and Calibrd predicts the questions for that exact role and level.

Levels.fyi puts the median software engineer package at Synthesia in Greater London at £109K, with the highest reported at about £196K, read through search results on 23 September 2026. The ads that state pay give a floor: the principal or staff software engineer in Seattle starts at $200K base, and the senior engineering manager in Europe at 180,000 in euros, pounds or Swiss francs, each with stock options. Everyone gets 25 days of leave plus local holidays. Calibrd benchmarks the pay on any posting you scan against its level and location.

How to prepare for a Synthesia interview

In order
  1. 01Pick two projects you delivered and prepare them to the level of detail an hour-long deep dive needs: the problem, what you built, the impact, what you would change.
  2. 02Practise solving a practical problem with someone watching and an AI assistant open. The round welcomes AI coding, so show how you use it: prompts, checking its output, knowing when to write it yourself.
  3. 03Think through a video generation system before the design round: requests queued, GPU capacity, jobs that take minutes, failures and retries, delivering the result.
  4. 04Frontend engineers: take a real design file and practise turning one section into components out loud.
  5. 05Ask the recruiter whether your role still has a take-home. Older reports describe an eight-hour one on a cloud GPU.

This guide covers Synthesia's software, machine learning and research engineering loops. Commercial and marketing roles run a different process. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
