Surge AI interview, you apply by doing the work.
Updated · Sources at the end
Surge AI makes many candidates do the job before they talk to anyone. For operations and business roles, the ad links a written exercise: a lab customer emails to say that 40% of the data Surge returned is flawed and asks to not be charged, and you write the reply. For engineers and research engineers on its coding-evaluation team, the exercise is bigger: imagine a workforce of 1,000 software engineers and design the operation that benchmarks every new coding agent release, with the instructions you would give those engineers, a qualification test, a quality review process, sample output and a budget at $100 an hour. Surge publishes both prompts in full, and the coding one lists what weakens a submission. Other engineering and research roles apply by email with a CV and two or three sentences on why Surge, and the ads add that they love personal projects and writing.
Surge AI supplies human data, evaluations and reinforcement learning environments to AI labs. It has never raised venture funding; its ads say it has been profitable from day one, and Contrary Research put its staff at about 250 in September 2026. Much of its workforce is contract: it recruits contractors through a subsidiary, DataAnnotation, and runs its own contract track for software engineers. That route has a different screen, covered below as its own track.

Who Surge AI hires
Surge hires backend, frontend and full-stack engineers, forward-deployed engineers, research scientists and engineers, data scientists, and many operations roles (AI operations engineers, program and technical program managers, customer success, human data architects), mostly remote, with staff in San Francisco, New York and Seattle. Separately, it contracts software engineers to build agentic coding environments, and DataAnnotation contracts annotators and domain experts. Its ads ask for excellent communication, meticulous attention to detail and, for engineers, high taste for good engineering.
Surge runs two different routes in, and which one you are on decides everything about the screen. Employees apply by email and, for many roles, a written exercise. Contractors take a timed skills test and no interviews.
Track · Employee
Staff roles: engineering, research, operations
Engineering and research roles apply by email with a CV and two or three sentences on why Surge. Operations, business and coding-evaluation roles do a published exercise first and send it with the CV. The later rounds aren't published and no candidate has written them up; a Forbes profile says the CEO is as likely to ask a candidate about David Foster Wallace or linguistics as to set a coding problem.
Track · Contractor
Contract engineers and DataAnnotation
Surge's contract software engineer role (agentic coding environments, $100–$150+ an hour, remote) has three steps: a coding capability screen of a couple of hours, which Surge says replaces a multi-round interview loop, then ID verification, then a paid first real task. DataAnnotation, the subsidiary that recruits annotators and domain experts, uses a Starter Assessment of about an hour (one to two hours for coding, maths and other specialised tracks) that you can take only once, with no recruiters and no interviews.

Why Surge, to careers@surgehq.ai. The ads say personal projects and writing are welcome; send links.
Operations and business roles answer an unhappy customer by email. Coding-evaluation engineers and research engineers design a 1,000-engineer benchmarking operation. The exercise is sent with the CV.
Operations, business and coding-evaluation rolesNo candidate has written up Surge's later rounds. The CEO, in a Forbes profile, is described as just as likely to ask about writing or linguistics as to set a coding problem; the company says it values creativity.
Surge AI's exercises: what they ask and how to answer them
Surge's published prompts, and how to take eachSurge publishes its take-home exercises in full and links them from its job ads, so you can read the actual prompt before you apply. There are two main ones: an email to an unhappy customer for operations and business roles, and a benchmark operation plan for coding-evaluation engineers and research engineers. Neither states a time limit. Here is what each asks and what the prompt itself says makes a strong answer.
- The customer email: The customer says raters wrongly flagged three responses as inaccurate when only one was, calls 40% of the data flawed, and asks to not be charged. Write the email you would send: acknowledge it, say what you will check, commit to a fix in the quality process, and answer the charge question directly. Send it to careers@surgehq.ai with the subject line the exercise gives.
- The benchmark plan: write to the workers: The coding exercise lists writing about workers instead of to them as a weakness. Your instructions should be the actual document an engineer would read on day one.
- The benchmark plan: qualification and QA: Include a qualification test with pass or fail criteria and a rate-and-review process. The prompt warns against missing or vague qualification and QA sections, and against redundant review layers.
- The benchmark plan: numbers: Give a budget and timeline at the $100 an hour wage the prompt sets, and justify them. Unjustified pay rates or timelines are on the prompt's list of weaknesses.
- Short and dense: The prompt says an insightful one-pager is better than ten meandering pages, and invites you to write down your assumptions instead of guessing at them.
Read the exercise linked from your role's ad before you start; the prompt is the whole brief. If something is unclear, the coding exercise invites you to ask or to write the assumption down.

Contract rates as Surge and DataAnnotation publish them, read on 1 October 2026. Surge's staff ads don't post salary ranges, and Levels.fyi has too few submissions to quote. Surge has never raised venture funding, so staff equity is in a private company valued in the tens of billions in reported talks.
How to prepare for a Surge AI interview
- Read the exercise linked from your role's ad before you write anything.
- For the customer email, check the facts before you concede or push back, and answer the money question.
- For the benchmark plan, write instructions to the engineers, a pass or fail qualification test and a $100-an-hour budget.
- Keep it to an insightful page or two; the prompt says so.
- Send a personal project or a piece of writing with your application; the ads ask for them.
- Contractors: you can take DataAnnotation's Starter Assessment only once, so prepare before you start it.
This guide covers Surge AI's staff hiring and its two contract routes, kept apart: Surge's contract software engineer screen and DataAnnotation's assessments. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
