IMC Trading interview, from the assessment to the matching engine.

Updated · Sources at the end

IMC starts every process with an online assessment, and what comes after depends on your track. Software engineers code in Java or C++ only, then meet two engineers for an hour, then face a final round that candidates, citing IMC's prep material, describe as building a matching engine on IMC's remote machines in IntelliJ. Traders play market-making games: IMC's prep guide gives the example of quoting 95 to 105 on something you think is worth 100, and then holding a short position when the interviewer buys from you at 105.

IMC was founded in 1989 by two traders on the Amsterdam options floor and has about 2,070 employees across ten offices. It reported net trading revenue of $3.12 billion for 2025, up 40%, and on 4 October 2026 it had 168 open roles, most in Chicago, Sydney and Amsterdam. Miss and you wait for the next recruitment season: IMC's ads allow one application per role each year.

01

Who IMC Trading hires

IMC hires C++ and Java software engineers, trading engineers, FPGA engineers, quant researchers and traders, from graduates to experienced hires. Chicago had 47 open roles on 4 October 2026, Sydney and Amsterdam 24 each, then Mumbai, Hong Kong, London, Aarhus, Zug and New York. Its engineering prep guide lists data structures and algorithms, memory and computer architecture, and concurrency, and recommends A Tour of C++ and Effective Java. IMC's APAC recruiters say candidates need at least a Distinction average.

IMC runs different processes for software engineers, traders and quant researchers. All three start with an online assessment, and IMC says assessments vary by role.

  • Track · Engineering

    Software engineers

A HackerRank assessment in Java or C++, a one-way video interview, an hour with two engineers, and a final round reported as building a matching engine on IMC's machines in IntelliJ. Graduates join a five-week Development School.

  • Track · Trading

    Traders

Aptitude and mental maths tests, a recorded video, a first round described as a problem and then a game, and a final assessment day. IMC's own prep guide explains the market-making game. Graduates join a six-week Trading School.

  • Track · Research

    Quant researchers

A first round of about an hour, split between live coding and problem solving with a researcher. Graduate researchers in Chicago are posted at a $250,000 base.

02

What is the IMC Trading interview process?

IMC describes a five-step process and says assessments vary by role. Its recruiters list the order: an online assessment, a behavioural interview, a first technical interview, then a final assessment day of technical and behavioural stations. The detail per track below adds candidate reports from 2025 and 2026, marked as reported.

01
Online assessment
Engineers: HackerRank, reported as 2 problems in 120 minutes; traders: aptitude and maths tests

Engineers code in Java or C++, as the graduate ads state. Trader candidates in 2026 report an SHL test and a short HackerRank of logic and mental maths, proctored; earlier reports describe four BrainsFirst games. The format changes by role, region and year.

02
One-way video or behavioural call
Recorded answers, or a phone or Zoom call

Why IMC and why trading, your motivation and how you work. Reported for engineers in Amsterdam and for traders.

03
First technical round, engineers
About an hour with two engineers

Split between behavioural and technical: operating system internals, data structures such as how a hash map works, or a probability problem talked through.

Software engineers
04
First round, traders
A problem, then a game

Probability, expected value, game theory and mental maths, then a trading game. Read up on market making beforehand, as IMC's candidate portal suggests.

Traders
05
First round, researchers
About 60 minutes

One part live coding, one part problem solving with a quant researcher.

Quant researchers
06
Final round, engineers
Reported: a matching engine, coded on IMC's remote machines in IntelliJ

Build an order matching engine: price-time priority, partial fills, cancels. Candidates report passing every test case and still not getting an offer, so the code's design and your explanations count too.

Software engineers
07
Final assessment day, traders
Technical and behavioural stations

More games and problems under time pressure, with behavioural conversations between them. IMC aims to give feedback within a couple of days of the final stage.

IMC online assessment: what each track gets

From IMC's prep guides and candidate reports

Every IMC process starts with an online assessment, and IMC says assessments vary by role. Candidates confirm it: the format differs between engineers and traders, and has changed from year to year.

  • Software engineers: two coding problems: Reported as 2 medium to hard problems in 120 minutes on HackerRank, in Java or C++ only. Practise graph search, prefix sums and binary search in the language you will use, and write code that handles edge cases the hidden tests will check.
  • Traders: aptitude, logic and mental maths: 2026 candidates report an SHL test followed by a short, proctored HackerRank of logic and maths questions, about 12 to 15 minutes, with fractions, percentages and ratios. Earlier candidates describe four BrainsFirst games. Practise speed arithmetic without a calculator.
  • The waiting: Several 2026 candidates report hearing nothing for weeks after the assessment. Keep applying elsewhere; IMC's ads allow one application per role per season, so a silence does not let you reapply sooner.
  • Prosperity, another way in: IMC's Prosperity trading challenge had 22,600 players in 2025, and IMC says several top performers went on to internships and graduate roles.

Calibrd cannot rehearse the timed tests. It can prepare you for the interviews and the explanations that follow them.

What IMC Trading screens for

IMC's prep guides say what it looks for, and both stress that interviewers are not trying to trick you.

  • Solid computer science: data structures, algorithms, memory and concurrency
  • Modern C++ or Java, written cleanly under time pressure
  • Clear reasoning about probability and expected value, out loud
  • Calm decisions under uncertainty, the core of market making
  • Strong academics: IMC's APAC recruiters ask for at least a Distinction average

How to prepare for an IMC Trading interview

  1. Engineers: practise the assessment in Java or C++, the only languages the graduate ads allow.
  2. Build a small order book with price-time priority, partial fills and cancels before the final round.
  3. Revise memory, caches and concurrency; IMC's tech prep guide lists them by name.
  4. Traders: read IMC's trading prep guide on market making and practise quoting and adjusting out loud.
  5. Practise mental maths daily: fractions, percentages and ratios, against a timer.
  6. Apply to the role you want most: one application per role per season.

This guide covers IMC's software engineer, trader and quant researcher hiring, for graduates, interns and experienced hires, across its Amsterdam, Chicago and Asia offices. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
