Crossover interview, decoded.
Updated · Sources at the end
Crossover hires through tests, and most people never reach a human. After a short AI screening chat, every candidate takes the Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test, 50 questions in 15 minutes, and most roles need at least 35 correct. Then comes a job skills assignment graded without your name on it, a single interview with the hiring manager, and a second, live-proctored sitting of the same test before any offer. Crossover says fewer than 1% of applicants get in, and that 99% of people who take the test don't finish it.
Crossover is the hiring arm of a group of companies owned by Joe Liemandt's ESW Capital and Trilogy, including the Alpha School network. The jobs are full-time and remote, paid in US dollars at one fixed rate per role, and work is tracked in 10-minute blocks by Crossover's WorkSmart software, which takes screenshots and webcam photos. That tracking is the reason for most of the criticism the company gets, and this guide covers it so you can decide before you spend the time.

The questions for your exact Crossover role and level.

Who Crossover hires
Crossover recruits for software engineering, AI, finance, marketing and a large number of education roles, most of them fully remote and open worldwide. This guide follows the software engineer path. The process is the same for every role; the CCAT pass mark and the skills assignment change with the job, and senior roles need higher CCAT scores.
What is the Crossover interview process?
Crossover publishes its selection process in six steps, plus official guides to the CCAT and to the proctored retest. Everything happens online. Crossover says strong candidates can go from application to offer in a few days. Candidate accounts on Glassdoor and Blind could not be read for this guide, so the steps below come from the company's own pages unless marked otherwise.
An AI interviewer asks about your skills, education and eligibility, to check the basic fit for the role before any test. Crossover says final hiring decisions are made by people.
Verbal reasoning, maths and logic, and spatial reasoning. Each role has its own target score; Crossover says 35 out of 50 is most often the lowest pass and senior roles ask for more. A fail means a six-month wait before you can take it again, and a pass is valid for six months across applications.
A task modelled on the real work: software engineers write code. Crossover says the work is graded blind, without your name or background attached.
Crossover describes it as a conversation about your working style and fit, with time for your own questions, after the tests have already measured your skills.
A trained examiner checks your ID and your room, and watches through your webcam and phone. Your score must meet the role's minimum and sit close to your first CCAT; a big drop ends the application, though the examiner can allow a second attempt if nerves were the cause.
Crossover says offers follow quickly once the proctored score is confirmed, and that several candidates for the same level may get offers at once.
Crossover's CCAT: the score you need and how to take it
What it tests, the score, and the rulesThe CCAT is the filter. It is 50 questions in 15 minutes, about 18 seconds each, on verbal reasoning, maths and logic, and spatial reasoning. Crossover says 35 out of 50 is most often the lowest pass, which puts you around the 85th percentile, that senior roles need more, and that 43 or above is excellent. The test is free. Crossover's own guide is the one to prepare with, and it warns that using most third-party CCAT material counts as cheating and gets an application disqualified; the one outside site it names as allowed is 12minprep.com.
- The time limit: Answer the easy questions fast to bank time. Crossover says the questions get harder as you go, few people finish, and a wrong answer costs nothing, so skip a question you are stuck on rather than lose the time.
- No calculator: Calculators are not allowed; pen and paper are. Crossover suggests doing a few basic sums on paper beforehand if you are rusty.
- Playing to your strengths: Crossover says you can pass by spending your time on the question types you are fastest at and skipping the ones you can't answer quickly.
- The room and the connection: Take it rested, somewhere with no interruptions. Crossover warns that a pop-up or an internet glitch during the 15 minutes can be read as an unfair advantage.
- The proctored retest: Before any offer you take the same test again, watched live through your webcam and phone. Your score has to meet the role's minimum and stay close to your first result, so a first score you can't repeat will end the application.
A CCAT pass is valid for six months and can be reused for other Crossover roles. A fail means waiting six months to try again.
What Crossover screens for
Crossover says openly what it screens for, and the test result carries more weight than anything on your CV.
- Cognitive aptitude: Crossover says it hires only people who score high on the CCAT, because it believes the score predicts job performance better than a CV
- Skills you can show in a blind-graded assignment, with no credit for where you studied or worked
- Honesty on the tests: the proctored retest exists to catch scores that were not your own work
- Comfort with measured, tracked remote work: WorkSmart logs every 10 minutes of paid time
- Persistence: Crossover says many people who fail the CCAT pass it six months later
Crossover interview questions
Drawn from what they say they testThe CCAT and the skills assignment decide most applications, and Crossover publishes no list of interview questions. What follows is built from what the company says each step looks at, so what you practise matches what it scores. There is deliberately no CCAT practice here: Crossover says most third-party CCAT material counts as cheating.

Crossover publishes a fixed annual figure and hourly rate on every listing, and everyone hired into a role is paid the same; on its job board on 28 September 2026, most roles sat between $60,000 a year ($30 an hour) and $200,000 ($100 an hour), with engineering listings advertising up to $200,000 and a few leadership roles far higher. Most roles are paid by the hour for a 40-hour week tracked in WorkSmart, which records 10-minute time cards with screenshots of your work window and webcam photos; Crossover says you can review and delete a photo before it is submitted. Forbes reported this tracking in 2019 in an article titled "Crossover: A software sweatshop", and Crossover's own CCAT guide mentions a Trustpilot score of 1.6, which it puts down to people who fail the tests. Calibrd benchmarks any offer against your level and location in the report.
How to prepare for a Crossover interview
- Decide about the tracking first. WorkSmart logs screenshots and webcam photos in 10-minute blocks during paid hours; read Crossover's WorkSmart page before you spend time on the tests.
- Prepare for the CCAT with Crossover's own guide and the practice in its system. Crossover treats most third-party CCAT material as cheating and names 12minprep.com as the one outside exception.
- Take the CCAT only when you are ready. A fail locks you out for six months, and a pass is reused for six months across applications.
- Do your sums on paper beforehand. There is no calculator on the test.
- Read the skills assignment brief line by line. It is graded blind against what it asks for, with no one to clarify it.
- Make sure you can repeat your score. The proctored retest compares your live result with your first one before any offer.
Crossover recruits for many client companies in its group and for roles well beyond engineering, including teaching jobs at Alpha School; the steps are the same across them. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
