Zapier interview, where AI fluency is the bar.

Updated · Sources at the end

Zapier tests AI fluency at every stage of hiring and has written down how. Its Head of Talent describes four points where it is measured: the application, the first screen (by a person or an AI recruiter), the skills test and the executive interview. In the skills tests, Zapier says it watches candidates work with AI in real time, to see how they prompt, push back on an output and adapt, and it says a rough result with strong reasoning and real iteration beats a polished one with no visible process. The bar is set by a rubric with four levels, from unacceptable to transformative, and since March 2026 the minimum is AI embedded in your core work, repeatable systems rather than one-off prompts, and a clear impact on quality or speed. Engineers on Blind name the round they meet: an AI-native coding round.

The rest of the process is written down too. No résumé is required; the application asks the questions an interview would usually start with, and Zapier commits to replying within seven days. Some candidates are invited to an optional AI recruiter screen of 15 to 20 minutes, reviewed by a person, which Zapier introduced after one software engineering role drew several thousand applications in 48 hours. Live interviews outside the skills test don't allow AI. Hiring is light at the start of October 2026, with 10 roles open and one of them in engineering, but the process is the same across functions, and AI fluency is the part most candidates haven't prepared for.

01

Who Zapier hires

Zapier hires engineers, engineering managers, data, product, design, sales and operations people, all remote, across the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Its engineering managers describe the engineer they want as product-minded: someone who seeks out customer problems and can tell the story behind their work, not just the code. Every function is assessed for AI fluency against its own version of the rubric.

02

What is the Zapier interview process?

Zapier publishes its hiring steps. Candidates add the names of the engineering rounds inside the skills stage: an AI-native coding round, live coding and an architecture interview for senior engineers.

01
Application
Online, no résumé required

In-depth questions that would usually open an interview. Zapier counts this as the first of its four AI fluency checks, and says it replies within seven days.

02
Recruiter screen
With a recruiter, or an optional AI recruiter for 15 to 20 minutes

Career goals and fit for the role. The AI screen is opt-in with no penalty for declining, and a Zapier recruiter reviews every transcript before anyone advances.

03
Hiring manager
Video call

Your skills, behaviours and experience. Engineering managers say they want the stories behind your work: why you built it, the problem it solved, and how it helped users.

04
Skills assessment and interviews
A short take-home, a Zoom interview with the team, cross-functional interviews

Where Zapier watches you work with AI. Engineers report an AI-native coding round, and live coding and an architecture interview for senior roles, with design questions about Zapier-like functionality.

05
Executive interview
With an executive leader

Alignment with Zapier's standards and culture, and the last of the four AI fluency checks.

06
Decision, references, offer
Rubrics, then reference and background checks

Candidates are scored against rubrics. References run through HiPeople and live calls; Zapier says your current employer isn't contacted without consent.

Zapier's AI fluency test: the rubric and the skills test

What Zapier says it scores, and how to show it

Zapier has published how it tests AI fluency, which most companies only hint at. It checks at four points, the application, the first screen, the skills test and the executive interview, against a rubric with four levels (unacceptable, capable, adoptive, transformative) written separately for each function. In March 2026 it raised the minimum bar. Here is what it says it looks for and how to show it.

  • The minimum bar: Zapier's words: AI embedded into your core work, repeatable systems rather than one-off prompts, and a clear impact on quality or efficiency. For engineers, it says using AI only for snippets, debugging or summaries inside an unchanged workflow is unacceptable. Come with one system you built and its measured effect.
  • The skills test is watched: Zapier says it observes candidates working with AI in real time: how they prompt, push back on an output and adapt. Narrate it. Say what you asked for, why you rejected a suggestion, and what you checked.
  • Process beats polish: Zapier says a rough result with strong reasoning and real iteration is a better signal than a polished one with no visible process. Show your iterations instead of hiding them.
  • The trendline: Zapier says it now asks what you started with, what you tried and abandoned, and how your approach evolved. Prepare that story with dates and tools; someone who plateaued months ago reads differently from someone still improving.
  • Accountability: Zapier's phrase is that you can delegate the work but not the accountability. Explain how you review, test and own what AI produces before it ships.
  • Where AI isn't allowed: Zapier's rules ban AI in live interviews unless it is a required part of a skills presentation, and ask you to be open about what AI contributed to a take-home. Use it where the test asks for it, and nowhere else live.

Managers have a higher bar: Zapier says a manager who is fluent personally but whose team still works the old way doesn't meet it. Bring evidence of how you led your team's adoption.

04

What Zapier screens for

Zapier has five published values, and the last one is the reason AI fluency runs through every interview.

  • Default to action: something real delivered today usually beats something uncertain later
  • Default to transparency: work in the open across a dozen time zones
  • Grow through feedback
  • Empathy over ego
  • Build the robot: automate the work that a well-designed AI or automation system could do

How to prepare for a Zapier interview

  1. Build or document one repeatable AI workflow from your real work, with a number on its effect.
  2. Prepare your AI trendline: what you used a year ago, what you dropped, what you do now.
  3. Practise coding with an AI assistant out loud, rejecting and fixing suggestions as you go.
  4. Have a design ready for running automations at scale: triggers, queued steps, retries and run history.
  5. Answer the application questions as carefully as an interview; they are the first AI fluency check.
  6. Don't use AI in live interviews unless the skills test asks for it; Zapier's rules ban it.

This guide covers Zapier's engineering hiring. Every other function goes through the same steps and is scored on its own version of the AI fluency rubric. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
