HSBC technology interview, decoded.
HSBC hires engineers through two doors. Graduates apply to a programme and sit an online job simulation with written and video answers, then a three-hour assessment centre. Experienced engineers apply to a role, and candidates in 2026 describe a technical round run on the Karat platform: 30 minutes to find a bug in some code and extend it, and a system design discussion where you are given a long scenario and asked to find everything wrong with it. Both doors end in interviews on HSBC's four values, and HSBC's own rules say you must not use generative AI to produce answers during live or recorded interviews.
Most of HSBC's engineers work outside its headquarters cities. More than 23,000 people work in its technology centres in Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and there are technology teams in Guangzhou, Xi'an, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Hong Kong, where HSBC employs about 20,000 people, had few technology openings in September 2026: seven of its 244 Hong Kong postings sat in the technology unit. HSBC says more than 20,000 of its developers use AI coding assistants.

Who HSBC hires
Different tracks, one barHSBC hires software engineers, data engineers, architects and cyber security specialists, on a grade ladder that runs from GCB6 at entry level up to Principal and Distinguished Engineer. Graduate programmes teach basic programming, debugging, code readability and release management. For visas, HSBC says sponsorship depends on each country's rules and on business need, and every graduate programme states in its eligibility criteria whether it accepts candidates who need one. In Hong Kong the standard route for a non-local professional is the General Employment Policy, which needs a salary broadly in line with the market.
The two doors run different processes, and only the graduate one is published in detail.
Track · Graduates
Programme application, job simulation, assessment centre
HSBC publishes this one: a 10 to 15 minute application form, a 90-minute online assessment in one or two stages of about 40 minutes each, and a three-hour assessment centre, mostly virtual. You hear about the online assessment within a couple of days, and HSBC says you get a final decision with developmental feedback at each stage.

Role application, online assessment, technical and business interviews
HSBC's outline is a CV, online assessments, and telephone or face-to-face interviews of 30 to 60 minutes; some roles use recorded video interviews instead of a phone call. Candidates in India describe a Karat technical round and two business interviews.

- We get it done: moving at pace and making things happen

HSBC interview questions
Candidate-reported themesThe technical themes come from 2026 accounts of the Karat round. The behavioural questions are built on HSBC's four values, which is what the business interviews ask about.
Behavioural & motivation
- Tell me about a time you moved a piece of work forward quickly when others were waiting.
- Describe a decision you made that looked right in the short term and wrong in the long term. What did you learn?
- Tell me about a time you changed your approach after hearing a different perspective.
- Describe a project where you had to work across teams or countries to deliver.
- Why HSBC, and why this role?
Technical
- Debugging existing code: Find the bug in a short piece of code, then extend it with new functions
- Design critique: Read a long system scenario and name what is wrong, such as a cache that expires too fast, and why it matters
- Basic data structures under time: The coding is simple, one candidate says; the test is speed and the basics
- Backend code: Live coding described as developing and updating backend code

Predict my HSBC questions →HSBC Karat interview: what it asks and how to prepare
Reported tasks and how to take themKarat is a company that runs technical interviews for employers, and HSBC candidates in India describe their technical round on it in 2026. One invitation listed two parts, a system design discussion and live coding on backend code. A candidate who sat it in July 2026 describes a long scenario in which you find all the things that are wrong, and 30 minutes of coding to find a bug and extend the same code. They call the code easy and the test one of time and basic data structures. No account we found says whether Hong Kong or London roles use Karat, so ask your recruiter.
- Find what is wrong in a design: Read the whole scenario before answering, then go through it layer by layer: data, caching, scaling, failure handling, security. For each problem say why it is a problem; the candidate's example was a two-minute cache TTL, where the interviewer wanted to hear why it hurts and did not ask for the fix.
- Find the bug: Run the code in your head on a small input, find where the output goes wrong and fix the smallest thing. Say what the bug was before you change it.
- Extend the same code: Add the new functions in the style of the existing code and reuse what is there. One candidate ran out of time before the third question, so keep moving and leave polish for last.
- Practise at speed: Time yourself on short tasks such as averages, filters and true or false checks over lists and maps, 30 minutes for a bug fix plus two small functions.
HSBC's rules say you must not use GenAI to generate responses during live or recorded interviews, and must not submit work you cannot personally explain. Using AI to prepare is allowed.
Pay
What the offer looks likeTotals a year for HSBC software engineers in Hong Kong on Levels.fyi, read on 26 September 2026. The page's range is HK$624K to HK$1.08M+; the grades are shown as monthly amounts in US dollars, so GCB5 and GCB4 are converted at the page's own rate and rounded, and should be treated as estimates. Pay is almost all base salary with a small bonus. HSBC's Hong Kong ads carry no salary. Calibrd benchmarks the offer against your grade and location in the report.

- For design, practise critique as well as building: take a design, list what is wrong and explain why each problem matters.
- Prepare one story per value, told as situation, task, action and result, with your own part clear.
- Don't use AI during the interviews. HSBC's rules forbid it, while allowing it for research and preparation.

This guide covers HSBC's technology hiring. HSBC publishes its graduate process and its interview rules; the Karat round and the offer delays come from candidate accounts in India, and we have not found a Hong Kong account of the technical round. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
