Meta London interview, decoded.

Meta interviews for London the way it interviews everywhere: a 45-minute technical screen, then an onsite of at least two coding rounds, two system or product design rounds and a behavioural round. Two things make the loop different from most. Since 2023 team matching happens before the offer, so an offer depends on a hiring manager choosing you. And the level is decided in the loop itself: the design and behavioural rounds carry the most weight, and a weak behavioural round can move an E5 candidate down to E4.

London is Meta's largest engineering hub outside the United States, which Meta itself said in 2022, with teams on Instagram, Reality Labs, Workplace and Ads & Business Products, and its office at King's Cross. The hub has shrunk since. Meta's UK company accounts show the average engineering team falling from 4,604 in 2023 to 4,334 in 2024 and total UK staff from 6,338 to 5,679, with £78.9 million of severance in 2023. In May 2026 Meta began cutting about 8,000 jobs worldwide and moving more than 7,000 people to new teams, and a group of UK staff is organising a union.

01

Who Meta London hires

The roles and the background

Meta London hires software engineers from E3 to staff level, machine learning engineers and engineering managers. Facebook UK holds an A-rated sponsor licence for the Skilled Worker and Global Business Mobility visas, so candidates from outside the UK can be sponsored; the Skilled Worker route needs a salary of at least £41,700, well below Meta's entry-level pay.

02

What is the Meta London interview process?

Round by round

The shape below is Meta's loop as interviewing.io documents it in late 2025, with Meta's own description of the technical screen. London candidates sit the same loop; nothing we could verify shows a London-specific round.

01
Recruiter screen
A call

Background, level and location, and visa status if you are coming from outside the UK.

02
Technical screen
45 minutes with an engineer

Meta's own description: a 45-minute conversation with an engineer to assess your technical skills. interviewing.io reports two coding questions, LeetCode easy or medium, to finish in about 35 minutes.

03
Onsite: coding
At least two rounds

Algorithmic problems at speed, with clean code and complexity stated. Coding decides whether Meta hires you.

04
Onsite: system or product design
Two rounds

A system design or a product architecture round, depending on the role. Design decides how Meta levels you.

05
Onsite: behavioural
One round

Conflict, ownership, scope and growth. At E5 this round alone can decide between an E5 offer and an E4 one.

06
Team matching
Conversations with hiring managers, before the offer

Since 2023 the offer comes only once a team picks you. The section below goes through what candidates report about it.

03

What Meta London screens for

What every round is really testing

Meta's loop is designed to answer two questions separately, and preparing for both is the difference between an offer at your level and one below it.

  • Coding speed and correctness, which decide whether you are hired
  • Design judgement at scale, which decides your level
  • Scope and ownership in the behavioural round, especially at E5 and above
  • Moving fast and shipping, the way Meta describes its own culture
  • Fit with the team you match with, because the offer depends on it

Meta London interview questions

Candidate-reported themes

The coding and design questions are Meta's well-documented set. The themes below follow interviewing.io's and HelloInterview's 2025 to 2026 guides, with the behavioural questions that decide the level.

Behavioural & motivation

  • Why Meta, and why London?
  • Tell me about the project with the largest scope you owned, and your exact part in it.
  • Tell me about a disagreement with a teammate about a technical approach and how it was resolved.
  • Describe a time you had to deliver with less time than you needed. What did you cut?

Technical

  • Coding at speed: Two problems in about 35 minutes on the screen, easy to medium, and more of the same onsite
  • System design: Services at Meta's scale: storage, caching, feeds, messaging, with trade-offs stated before you are asked
  • Product architecture: For product roles: an API and data model for a feature, from the client to the backend
  • AI-assisted coding, a pilot: Since October 2025 Meta has piloted a 60-minute round in CoderPad with an AI assistant, replacing one coding round; no London candidate account we could check mentions it

These are the reported themes — your loop is role-specific. Paste the actual posting and Calibrd predicts the questions for that exact role and level.

Meta team matching and levelling: what decides your offer

What candidates report

Two decisions come after the interviews and shape the offer: which team takes you, and at what level. interviewing.io reports that since 2023 team matching happens before the offer and the offer depends on it. Meta is also the only large tech company that directly asks its interviewers about down-levelling, so the level is an open question until the end.

  • Team matching before the offer: After the onsite you talk with hiring managers from several teams. Candidates on Hacker News describe waits of months and, in one case, no offer after nine months in team matching; those accounts are from the US. Plan for the wait as a real possibility.
  • How the level is decided: Coding decides whether you are hired; design and behavioural decide the level. HelloInterview puts it plainly for E5: the behavioural round alone can decide between E5 and E4. Prepare it as seriously as the coding.
  • Make the behavioural round show scope: At E5, bring stories where you set direction across a team: a decision you drove, a trade-off you owned, a conflict you resolved. Say your part exactly.
  • Keep your options open during matching: Tell your recruiter which product areas you would take, and keep other processes going. The offer only exists once a team says yes.

If you are coming from outside the UK, raise the visa on the recruiter call. Facebook UK is a licensed sponsor, but the move adds time to the start date.

06

Pay

What the offer looks like
E3 · Software Engineer≈ £85K
E4 · Software Engineer≈ £150K
E5 · Senior Software Engineer≈ £275K
E6 · Staff Software Engineer≈ £350K

Totals a year for software engineers at Meta in the Greater London Area on Levels.fyi, read on 26 September 2026. The page gives £84.9K at E3 and shows the other levels as monthly amounts in US dollars; E4 to E6 are converted at the page's own rate and rounded, so treat them as estimates. Stock grows fast with level: at E5 it is about half the package. The Skilled Worker visa's general minimum salary is £41,700, far below any Meta level. Calibrd benchmarks the offer against your level and location in the report.

How to prepare for a Meta London interview

In order
  1. Practise coding at Meta's pace: two easy-to-medium problems in about 35 minutes, clean and with complexity stated.
  2. Prepare design for the level you want. Design decides your level, so rehearse the round at E5 depth if you are aiming for E5.
  3. Treat the behavioural round as a levelling round. Bring stories with real scope and your exact part in them.
  4. Plan for team matching before the offer. Name the product areas you would take, and keep other processes going until a team says yes.
  5. Know the hub you are joining. London has shrunk since 2023 and Meta is moving thousands of people to new teams in 2026; ask the recruiter which London teams are hiring.
  6. If you need a visa, say so on the first call; Facebook UK is a licensed sponsor.

Meta's loop is documented by many guides and this page relies on them for its shape. What is specific to London (the size of the hub, the visa, the pay) comes from Meta's UK filings, the Home Office register and Levels.fyi; the team-matching accounts we could open are from the US. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
