Epic Systems interview, where a reasoning test comes first.
Updated · Sources at the end
Epic Systems makes the electronic health records software that about 42% of US acute care hospitals use, and it hires mostly new graduates into software development, technical solutions, project management, quality management and training. Its process is short and written down: apply, hear about the role, take the skills assessments, a final interview, an offer, then a paid trip to Madison. Epic says the assessments are logic and reasoning questions that need no prep work.
That makes the decisions around the test the part you can prepare for. Epic only lets you apply to one position at a time, so the role you pick matters. Every posting requires relocation to the Madison area, Epic does not sponsor visas, and most people work in the office five days a week. Go in knowing the hours and the travel, and with a clear answer to why you want this job in particular.

Who Epic Systems hires
Epic has about 14,000 employees in Verona, Wisconsin, and $5.7 billion in annual revenue. Software developers need a degree in computer science, maths, software or computer engineering, or a related field, and 'a history of academic excellence or professional success'. Project managers and quality managers can have any major, and technical solutions engineers need no programming experience. Interns must be at least juniors looking for full-time work, and they move to a full-time job with no extra interview. New in 2026: Epic now ships its own AI tools, such as Art for charting and Emmie for patients, and its intern postings promise the same agentic AI development tools the full-time developers use.
What is the Epic Systems interview process?
Epic publishes six steps on its careers site. It gives no durations or round counts, so the formats below are only as specific as the sources allow.
One position at a time. Pick the role you most want, because you cannot run two applications in parallel.
An overview of the role. Use it to ask about travel, hours and the team, and to test whether the role is the right one before the assessments.
Logic and reasoning questions that Epic says need no prep work. A 2016 candidate described a three-hour, webcam-proctored, SAT-style test with English, maths and logic. Epic asks you to check with your HR contact if you are unsure whether outside help is allowed.
In 2016, a full day in Wisconsin with a few more tests. Epic's intern page sums up the whole process as technical assessments and a final interview.
Epic publishes no salaries. One 2020 candidate said Epic's offer was half of a Facebook offer in Seattle; that is one report, not a range.
After the offer. See the campus and the city you would be moving to before you decide.
Epic Systems skills assessment: what is known
From Epic's own pages and the reports that existEpic calls this step its skills assessments and describes them as logic and reasoning questions that require no prep work. It does not publish the length, the sections or the pass mark. The candidate reports that exist are old, and the most detailed claims come from a company that sells preparation for the test.
- Logic and reasoning, by Epic's own description: Epic says no prep work is needed. Sleep, a quiet room and a clear head will do more for you than cramming.
- Long and proctored, in older reports: A 2016 candidate described three hours, live webcam proctoring with a room scan, and SAT-style English, maths and logic. Plan for a long sitting and a clean desk.
- A made-up programming language: Only a test-prep vendor reports this, along with spreadsheet questions. If it appears, read the rules given carefully and apply them exactly as stated; it tests reasoning, not a language you already know.
- Outside help: Epic asks candidates to check with their HR contact whenever they are unsure whether outside aid is allowed. Ask first rather than guess.
- The test happens after you choose a role: You can only apply for one position at a time, so the assessment you take is for the role you picked. Choose it before you start.
Calibrd cannot rehearse the assessment itself. It can prepare you for the final interview, and for the questions about hours, travel and Madison you should have answers to before you get there.
