Visa interview, from the online test to the offer.

Updated · Sources at the end

Visa starts almost every engineering application with an online coding test, and the platform depends on where you enter. Graduates and campus candidates describe CodeSignal: four problems in about 70 minutes, the first two easy and the last two harder. Experienced and staff engineers describe HackerRank: two to four problems in 90 minutes. After the test come a coding round, a system design round that often centres on payments, and a hiring manager round that candidates say is a real elimination point. The part they complain about most is the end: weeks of silence after the final round and after reference checks.

01

Who Visa hires

Visa's job board listed 806 roles on 8 October 2026, 215 of them in engineering and technology: 111 in software engineering, 23 in data engineering and 13 in data science. The largest engineering hubs were Bengaluru (57), Austin (44), Singapore (34), Foster City (25) and Bellevue (13). Postings say Visa requires at least three days a week in the office. No new-grad or US software internship roles were open that day; campus hiring runs in its own season.

02

What is the Visa interview process?

Visa doesn't publish its interview process, so the steps below are how candidates in 2025 and 2026 describe it, and they vary by level and location. The problems they report are about waiting: no reply after the hiring manager round, and offers that take weeks after the reference check.

01
Application
Online, on Visa's job board

A 2026 candidate who applied directly received the online test within a few days. Read the posting for the office: Visa requires at least three days a week on site.

02
Online coding test
CodeSignal for campus and new grads; HackerRank for experienced hires

Campus and new-grad candidates report four problems in about 70 minutes on CodeSignal, two easy and two medium or harder; one 2026 report says 90 minutes. Senior and staff candidates report HackerRank, two to four problems in 90 minutes, from easy to hard. Data science candidates also report a HackerRank test.

03
Coding round
Live, with an engineer

Data structures and algorithms plus questions on your current work. Reported problems include linked-list intersection, the longest substring without repeats and cycle detection in a graph. Java and Spring candidates report detailed questions on their stack.

04
System design round
Design with follow-up questions

Reported prompts include a payment system with payment states and retries, a rate limiter and a notification system, and scaling your own project. Staff candidates may get high-level and low-level design in one round. Some junior candidates get a second coding round instead.

05
Hiring manager round
Behavioural, often four or five questions

Challenges, disagreements and ownership. Candidates report being rejected here after positive technical rounds, so prepare it as seriously as the coding.

06
Documents and references
With HR

Recruiters ask for documents for offer validation and professional references. Candidates in 2026 report waiting two weeks to six weeks at this stage, often without updates.

Visa online assessment: CodeSignal and HackerRank

Reported problems and how to solve them

Which test you get depends on how you enter. Campus and new-grad candidates report CodeSignal; experienced and staff engineers, and data scientists, report HackerRank. Visa doesn't publish the format, so these are candidates' accounts from 2025 and 2026, and they don't all agree on the length.

  • Campus and new grad: CodeSignal, about 70 minutes, four problems: Candidates describe two easy problems, a medium one and a harder fourth. Do the first two quickly and cleanly, because they carry the score; then spend the remaining time on the third before trying the fourth. One 2026 report says 90 minutes, so read your invitation.
  • Experienced and staff: HackerRank, 90 minutes, two to four problems: Reported difficulty runs from easy to hard, with graph and dynamic programming problems. Write a correct solution before an optimised one, and test the edge cases yourself, since hidden test cases decide the score.
  • Data science: HackerRank: A 2026 US data science candidate reports clearing a HackerRank test before the interviews. Expect coding and data manipulation; ask your recruiter whether it includes statistics.
  • How competitive the campus test is: One 2025 India campus account says about 500 students took the test and 12 were selected. Treat the test as the main filter and practise timed sets of four problems.
  • After the test: Candidates report the next step arriving within days when it goes well. If you hear nothing after two weeks, a short note to the recruiter is reasonable.

The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at Visa.

What Visa screens for

Visa's rounds keep coming back to a few things, and the payments context runs through all of them.

  • Getting problems right under a clock. The online test decides who is interviewed, and later rounds still start with coding
  • Thinking in payments. Design prompts about payment states, retries and duplicate charges reward candidates who understand that money must move exactly once
  • Depth in your own work. Interviewers ask about your current project and stack, and senior rounds can skip coding to go deep on production systems
  • Owning disagreements and outcomes. The hiring manager round asks about challenges, conflict and ownership, and it rejects people
  • Patience at the end. The slowest part of Visa's process, by candidates' accounts, is after the last interview

How to prepare for a Visa interview

  1. Check which test you are invited to: CodeSignal for campus and new grads, HackerRank for experienced hires. Read the invitation for the time limit.
  2. Practise timed sets of four problems, two easy and two harder, finishing the easy ones fast and cleanly.
  3. Revise graphs and dynamic programming for the experienced-hire test.
  4. Prepare one payment system design from scratch: payment states, idempotent retries, timeouts with an unknown result, and reconciliation.
  5. Be ready to go deep on your current project and stack; senior rounds can skip coding for production systems.
  6. Prepare four or five stories for the hiring manager round: a hard challenge, a disagreement, ownership, a failure. Candidates are rejected here.
  7. Have your references and documents ready before the final round, to save time at the end.
  8. Expect to wait after the last interview. Keep other processes going, and follow up politely after two weeks.
  9. Ask about the office: Visa postings require at least three days a week on site.

This guide covers Visa's software engineering and data hiring, for campus, new-grad and experienced candidates. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
