Celonis interview, and where the challenge hours go.
Updated · Sources at the end
Most Celonis loops for customer-facing roles turn on one piece of homework. Candidates call it the Challenge Round: you get access to the Celonis platform and a set of customer data, and you play a Value Engineer for a prospective customer. You find where the process loses time or money, build dashboards that show it, put a value on fixing it, and present it. Before the real presentation there is a Dry Run with a Celonis Value Engineer who gives you feedback. The final interview, reported at about 90 minutes, opens with a presentation of about 15 minutes and about 15 minutes of questions, then moves to questions about Celonis, the role and why you want it.
Candidates say the instructions put the work at roughly 10 to 15 hours, and people who have never used the software report needing more. Since that is a lot of unpaid time, this guide is mostly about where to spend it: what candidates say gets judged, and what Celonis says it values.
Celonis was founded in 2011 and is based in Munich, with large teams in New York, Madrid and Bangalore. Its careers site lists more than 3,000 employees and more than 20 offices. Its most recent priced funding was in August 2022: $1 billion, made up of $400 million in equity and a credit facility of up to $600 million, at a valuation of about $13 billion.

Who Celonis hires
Celonis hires mostly for Value Engineering, its name for what other software companies split into sales engineering and customer success. A Value Engineer owns a customer from the first demo to renewal: discovery, demos, business cases, proof-of-value projects and value workshops with senior executives. On 16 October 2026, 126 of the 202 jobs on its board were in Value Engineering, from Associate Value Engineers to Principal Enterprise Architects, with Munich, New York, Bangalore, Madrid and London the biggest locations. Celonis Services hires deployment engineers and consultants who build and run the platform for customers, including graduates through the Galaxy Graduate Program. Engineering, 11 of the open roles, hires senior and staff backend engineers, mostly in Java, plus C++ for the query engine. About two thirds of the Munich ads ask for German, and many customer-facing ones ask for native-level German.

Celonis runs four hiring paths. The three customer-facing ones all include a challenge exercise; engineering swaps it for a coding take-home and live coding.
Track · VE
Value Engineering
The experienced-hire loop for Value Engineers and Solution Engineers: a recruiter call, an interview with a lead or hiring manager, then the Challenge Round with its Dry Run and final presentation. It is the loop most candidate reports describe, and the one this guide covers in most detail.
Track · Orbit
Orbit Graduate Program
The entry route into Value Engineering, as an Associate Value Engineer, hired into hubs in Madrid, Bangalore, Raleigh and New York. Celonis lists five steps: a recruiter call, an interview with an Orbit Program manager, an optional remote test on Python, machine learning and SQL, a challenge exercise with interviews, and a final interview with senior management.
Track · Galaxy
Galaxy Graduate Program
A 12-month program in Celonis Services, hiring in New York, Raleigh, Madrid, London, Munich and Bangalore, with titles such as Associate Deployment Engineer. Celonis lists a recruiter call, an interview with a Galaxy Program manager about your interest in process mining, a challenge exercise with interviews, and a final interview with senior management. Applications for North America run from March to May, and for Europe and APAC from May to August.
Track · Eng
Software engineering
Candidates describe a recruiter call, a hiring manager interview, a take-home assignment (reported in Java, with concurrency and API design), an interview where you defend the take-home, and an hour of live coding at roughly LeetCode medium level. Some loops add system design or a director round on multithreading.
What is the Celonis interview process?
Celonis publishes its selection process only for its graduate programs, and both name the challenge as a step. For experienced Value Engineering hires, the shape below comes from candidate reports on Glassdoor between 2022 and 2026, seen in search snippets. Candidates on Glassdoor report the Value Engineering loop taking around seven weeks on average, longer than the company average of about a month.
Your background, motivation and the role. Celonis says the recruiter also works out which of the roles you applied for fits best, and recommends applying for no more than three.
Your experience, why Celonis, and how you work with customers. Graduate candidates meet an Orbit or Galaxy Program manager, who Celonis says is checking your motivation and interest in process mining.
Celonis lists an optional test on Python, machine learning and SQL for the Orbit Program.
Orbit, optionalYou get platform access and customer data, learn the software, find inefficiencies, build dashboards and calculate the value of fixing them. Candidates report a buddy or contact at Celonis during this stage.
VE, Orbit and GalaxyYou present the challenge and get feedback. Some candidates were told the Dry Run would not lead to a rejection; others report being turned down right after it. Treat it as part of the evaluation.
VE and OrbitAbout 15 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of questions on your findings, then questions about Celonis, the role, your background and your motivation.
VE, Orbit and GalaxyCelonis lists this step for both graduate programs. Experienced-hire reports vary on whether it is a separate round.
Reported take-homes include a Java API with concurrency to design and a Java and Spring Boot backend task with about a week to finish it. The review asks why you built it that way. Live coding is reported as standard algorithms and data structures at medium difficulty.
EngineeringCelonis Challenge Round: where to spend the hours
What candidates report and what Celonis valuesThe Celonis Challenge Round is a take-home in which you act as a Value Engineer for a prospective customer: you use the Celonis platform and customer data to find inefficiencies, build dashboards, calculate the value of fixing them, and present the result. Celonis names a challenge exercise as a step in its Orbit and Galaxy graduate programs. Candidates on Glassdoor, seen in search snippets, describe a Dry Run with a Value Engineer before the final presentation, about 15 minutes of presenting and 15 of questions, and an estimate of 10 to 15 hours of work, with some reporting 20 to 30. Here is where those hours do the most good.
- Learn the software before you touch the data: Candidates say the Dry Run asks questions only someone who knows the software well can answer, and some lost days to platform access problems. Log in on the first day, and use the free Celonis Academy courses on building analyses and on PQL, its query language, so the analysis hours go into the customer's problem instead of the menus.
- Pick two or three findings and go deep: The task invites you to show everything the data contains. Choose the few inefficiencies with the biggest effect, show each on a clear dashboard, and be ready to explain how you found it. A short list you can defend under questions is worth more than a long one you can't.
- Put a number on every finding: Celonis' first value is Live for Customer Value, and its Value Engineering ads ask for business cases and value assessments. Turn each finding into money or time, show the formula and the assumptions, and give a cautious figure you can defend instead of the biggest one you can reach.
- Build the story for an executive: You have about 15 minutes. Open with what the customer cares about, then the findings, the value, and a clear next step. Candidates describe the audience as senior management, so keep the platform screens to the ones that prove a point.
- Treat the Dry Run as the real thing: Candidates disagree on whether the Dry Run is scored, and some were rejected after it. Arrive with a finished deck, ask what the Value Engineer would change, and change it. How you use the feedback is likely part of what they see.
- Save time for the second half: The final interview moves on to Celonis, the role and your motivation. Be able to explain process mining and process intelligence in plain words, know what Value Engineers do day to day, and have a clear answer to why Celonis. Celonis' own advice to graduates is to research the product and customer stories and talk to people who work there.
- A way to split 12 hours: Our suggestion, from the reports above: about three hours learning the platform, four on analysis and dashboards, two on the value calculation, two on the deck, and one rehearsing out loud with a timer. Then rework after the Dry Run.
Celonis gives no public description of the experienced-hire challenge, so ask your recruiter how long you have, whether the Dry Run is scored, and who will be in the room. Galaxy and engineering candidates report different exercises, so confirm what yours involves.
The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at Celonis.
