1Password interview, no live coding, and no AI in the room.

Updated · Sources at the end

1Password's developer interviews are reported as having no live coding. Instead you do a take-home (one candidate had 48 hours) and a technical round that digs into it: your choices, what you'd do with more time, and above all testing. Its postings add a rule of their own: use AI on your application if you like, but join live interviews without AI tools, because they want to see how you communicate and solve problems. Seniors may also get a design round on a project you've built, with the diagram drawn in advance; one candidate in July 2024 said that round decided it.

1Password take-home: how to prepare

Candidate reports

Candidates report a take-home rather than live coding, followed by a technical round that goes deep into it. One had 48 hours to finish; a 2024 senior brief was an events API. Here is how to prepare.

  • Write it as production code: Clear structure, input validation, error handling and a short README with your trade-offs.
  • Test it: The deep-dive is reported with an emphasis on testing. Show what you tested and say what you didn't.
  • Keep notes for the deep-dive: Write down the hardest part, the choices you made and what you'd do with more time; you'll be asked.
  • No AI in the interview: Using AI on the take-home is a judgement call; in the live deep-dive you explain it yourself, without AI tools.

1Password's postings welcome AI tools on the application and ask candidates to join live interviews without them.

1Password design round: bring your own architecture

One senior report, July 2024

One Vancouver senior candidate in July 2024 had a design round on a prior project: you draw the diagram in advance, bring it, and spend about an hour on tool choices, trade-offs and improvements. They said it was where they fell short. Here is how to prepare.

  • Pick the project: One you know deeply, where you made real decisions.
  • Draw it before: A clean diagram you can walk through in five minutes.
  • Prepare the trade-offs: For each major choice, the alternative and what it would have cost.
  • Know what you'd change: Two improvements you'd make now, and why.

This round rests on one report. Ask your recruiter whether your loop includes it.

  1. Treat the take-home as production code, with tests and a README of trade-offs.
  2. Write down the hardest part and what you'd do with more time.
  3. Plan to explain everything yourself: no AI tools in live interviews.

  5. Prepare stories for feedback, conflict and a time you failed.

This guide covers 1Password's developer and intern hiring. The AI policy, pay, values and internship details are 1Password's own; the rounds come from candidate reports, with dates where they give one. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
