Wealthsimple interview, and the system you bring yourself.

Updated · Sources at the end

Wealthsimple's best-known round is Bring Your Own System: instead of designing something you have never seen, you present a system you built and the interviewers dig into it. A senior candidate in June 2026 was asked about Kafka failure modes in theirs. Around it, candidates describe a hiring manager screen, a coding problem that grows in levels (a robot moving on a grid has come up repeatedly since 2019), and a final with managers on past work and behaviour. Expect three to four weeks end to end.

01

Who Wealthsimple hires

Wealthsimple builds investing, saving, banking, crypto and tax products for Canadians, with more than 1,500 employees and engineers working remotely across Canada. It hires software developers across product and platform teams, engineering managers, and interns each term. On 28 October 2026 its job board had one individual-contributor engineering role open (a Staff Software Developer) and two engineering manager roles, so check the board before you apply.

Before you apply, see how your resume reads to a hiring manager with a free resume review.

Wealthsimple does not publish its process for experienced engineers; what follows is from dated candidate reports. Its intern postings do state a process, and it differs.

  • Track · Experienced

    Software developers and seniors

Reported as four or five rounds over three to four weeks: a hiring manager or HR screen, Bring Your Own System, coding (a problem that grows in levels, sometimes two rounds back to back), and a final with managers on past technical work and behaviour.

  • Track · Intern

    Interns

From Wealthsimple's Winter 2027 intern posting: an application with a short video, a one-hour coding interview, then a 30-minute final with a manager where you bring a project you're proud of and walk through your role, decisions, trade-offs and lessons learned.

02

What is the Wealthsimple interview process?

Wealthsimple publishes no process for experienced engineers. These rounds come from dated candidate reports and the order varies by candidate.

01
Hiring manager or HR screen
A call with the hiring manager or a recruiter

The first round in the June 2026 senior loop was with the hiring manager.

02
Bring Your Own System
You present a system you built, then defend it

Reported as the second round in June 2026 (a senior candidate was asked about Kafka failure modes) and alongside coding in July 2025, where a candidate called it bring your own design problem.

03
Coding
A problem that grows in levels, in any language

June 2026: a three-level problem across two back-to-back rounds, about structuring the code well. A robot moving on a grid has come up since 2019 (a Mars rover in 2019, a robot vacuum with charging and obstacles added in 2023, a robot moving in four directions in 2025). The problem rotates: a banking operations list in 2022, a drone with basic controls in 2025.

04
Final with managers
Past technical work and behaviour

June 2026: a fourth round with two managers that the candidate called a topgrade interview. A June 2025 senior report ends with an HR chat to negotiate salary.

Wealthsimple Bring Your Own System: how to prepare

Candidate reports, June 2026 and July 2025

In Bring Your Own System you present a system you built, and the interviewers question it. Candidates in 2025 and 2026 describe it as a system design round on your own work. Here is how to prepare.

  • Pick the system: Choose one you know deeply and can draw in a few minutes, where you made real decisions.
  • Know how it fails: A senior candidate in June 2026 was asked about Kafka failure modes. Prepare what happens when each part goes down, and how you would notice.
  • Say what was yours: Be clear about what you built and decided, and what the team did.
  • Know what you'd change: Have one honest answer about what you would do differently now, and why.

Candidates report the round without a fixed format. Ask your recruiter how long the presentation should be.

The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at Wealthsimple.

Wealthsimple coding: the robot on a grid and problems that grow

Candidate reports, 2019 to 2026

Wealthsimple's coding rounds are reported as one problem that grows in levels, judged on how well the code is structured. A robot on a grid has come up several times; other loops got different problems.

  • The robot on a grid: A Mars rover in 2019, a robot vacuum with charging and obstacles in 2023, a robot moving in four directions in 2025. Practise one and add a rule at a time.
  • Structure first: June 2026: a three-level problem across two rounds, about structuring the code well. Keep each new level a small change.
  • Other problems: A banking operations list in 2022 and a drone with basic controls in 2025. The robot is common, not guaranteed.
  • Any language: A 2025 candidate could use any language. Use the one you write fastest.

One 2021 report had an order book question on HackerRank; no later report mentions HackerRank.

How to prepare for a Wealthsimple interview

  1. Pick the system you'll bring, and draw it in under five minutes.
  2. List how each part of it fails and how you'd notice.
  3. Practise a grid problem and add one rule at a time: obstacles, then charging.

  6. For an intern final, pick a project and its decisions, trade-offs and lessons.

This guide covers Wealthsimple's software developer and intern hiring in Canada. Everything about the experienced loop comes from dated candidate reports; the intern process and the values are Wealthsimple's own. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
