SpaceX interview, and the presentation that can end your day.

Updated · Sources at the end

SpaceX's software loop turns on a presentation. After a recruiter screen, a timed take-home of four to six hours and a deep dive on a past project, the onsite opens with you presenting a project of your own, in great technical detail, to the team you'd work with, followed by four or five one-to-one interviews with the people in the room. One candidate in October 2025 was asked to leave after the panel; the presentation can end the day. SpaceX hires on a huge scale (more than 280 open roles with software engineer in the title), but many roles, including internships, require US citizenship or permanent residence.

01

Who SpaceX hires

SpaceX builds Falcon and Starship rockets, Dragon and the Starlink satellite network, and now hires for xAI roles on the same board. On 28 October 2026 it had 2,845 open roles, about 750 in software, AI or data, mostly in Hawthorne, Bastrop, Redmond, Starbase and Palo Alto. Software engineers work on flight software, Starlink, manufacturing systems, simulation and internal platforms.

SpaceX's software and hardware loops differ in the screens and meet at the onsite, which opens with a presentation of your own past project.

  • Track · Software

    Software engineers

Reported in 2025 as a recruiter screen, a timed take-home of four to six hours, a one-to-one deep dive on a past project, then an onsite: a panel presentation of a project, then four or five one-to-one interviews. Teams vary.

  • Track · New grads and interns

    New grads and interns

SpaceX's new-grad postings ask for academic success (a GPA of 3.5 or higher, test scores in the 95th percentile, or a merit scholarship) and for having done something meaningfully difficult early. Intern postings list a 3.5 GPA as preferred.

  • Track · Eligibility

    Who can apply

Internships and many roles require US citizenship, permanent residence, or refugee or asylee status, under export control rules. No route into engineering from outside the US was found.

02

What is the SpaceX interview process?

SpaceX publishes no process. These stages come from dated 2025 software reports; teams vary in both directions.

01
Recruiter screen
A call about your background

A September 2026 El Segundo screen also asked quick fundamentals (binary tree and array costs) and SAT or ACT scores.

02
Timed take-home
Four to six hours

Domain-flavoured problems: a four-hour satellite-beams assessment (February 2025) and a six-hour test including matching DNA sequences (March 2025).

03
Project deep dive
One to one with an engineer

A past project in depth, before the onsite (October 2025).

04
Panel presentation
About an hour, to the team

Present a previous project in great technical detail. The October 2025 candidate was asked to leave after this panel.

05
One-to-one interviews
Four or five, back to back

With each team member who was at the presentation. A Starlink candidate in February 2025 was told that team asks no LeetCode questions for software.

SpaceX panel presentation: how to prepare

Software reports, 2025

Three dated 2025 software reports put a presentation at the start of the onsite: a previous project, in great technical detail, to the team you'd join, then one-to-ones with each of them. One candidate was sent home after the panel. Here is how to prepare.

  • Pick the project: One you led or built a major part of, with real technical decisions you can defend under questioning.
  • Go deep, not wide: The ask is great technical detail: architecture, data, trade-offs, failures, numbers.
  • Plan for an hour: A Starlink candidate had about an hour. Leave time for questions; the panel will interrupt.
  • Expect them again: The one-to-ones are with the people who watched, so they'll follow up on what you showed.

Some loops skip it: an October 2025 senior loop had one phone screen and two video calls, and no presentation.

The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at SpaceX.

SpaceX interview lore: what's real

Lore versus reports

Two things are repeated about SpaceX interviews more than they are reported. Here is what the dated evidence supports.

  • One 'no' kills the offer: Repeated by recruiting sites (for example a February 2026 process guide) but stated in no dated 2025–26 candidate report. Candidates do report being cut early, after the panel.
  • Submit five project ideas: Found only on a prep site's FAQ, with no candidate behind it. Software candidates report presenting a project of their own choice.
  • The GPA: New-grad postings list a GPA of 3.5 or higher among signs of academic success; intern postings list it as preferred, not required.
  • LeetCode: A 2025 Starlink candidate was told that team asks no LeetCode for software; screens still include fundamentals.

Treat lore as lore. Ask your recruiter what your onsite includes.

How to prepare for a SpaceX interview

  1. Choose the project you'll present and outline it for about an hour.
  2. Prepare the hardest failure in that project and how you'd redesign it.
  3. Practise a four-hour timed problem in a domain you don't know.
  4. Refresh data structure costs to answer in one sentence each.
  5. Check the role's eligibility rules before you apply.

This guide covers SpaceX's software hiring. Pay, requirements and eligibility are from SpaceX's postings; the loop comes from dated 2025–26 software reports, and lore is marked as lore. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
