Saab interview process, and the security vetting that decides it.

Updated · Sources at the end

Saab's Swedish engineering ads end with the same line: the role requires that you pass a security vetting under the security protection rules in force, and where Saab places the role in a security class, a citizenship requirement may follow. That vetting, the säkerhetsprövning, is the step that sets a Saab interview process apart from most tech employers, and the part least written about from the candidate's side. Saab staffs it with its own vetting officers, whose job ad lists conducting vetting interviews among their core duties.

The rest of the process is less documented. Saab does not publish a fixed list of interview rounds, its ads say it selects candidates as applications arrive, and we found no dated candidate account of a Swedish engineering loop from 2025 or 2026. So this guide is built around what is on the record: Saab's own ads, the law that governs the vetting, and Saab UK's graduate ads, which spell out their screening.

Who Saab hires

On 1 November 2026 Saab's job portal listed 696 open roles: 180 under Engineering, 103 under Information Technology Services, 83 student roles such as thesis projects and summer jobs, and the rest in production, project management and support. Engineering roles cluster in Linköping (52 that day), Karlskoga, Gothenburg, Solna and Arboga, with some in the US, Germany and the UK. The ads ask for systems engineers on Gripen, radar and electronic warfare, software developers for radar integration, network and test environment engineers with Linux, Kubernetes and CI/CD, and section managers in naval software. The Gripen radar integration ad, for one, asks for good Swedish and English, spoken and written.

Saab hires in Sweden and abroad, and the vetting depends on the country. Most readers will be in one of these three groups.

  • Track · Sweden

    Engineers in Sweden

You apply through Saab's portal. Saab says it selects as applications come in and may fill a role before the closing date, so apply early. Every engineering ad we read requires a security vetting; a minority of roles are placed in a security class and require Swedish citizenship.

  • Track · Security class

    Security-class roles

Where the ad says the role is placed in a security class, expect Swedish citizenship as a requirement and a deeper vetting: register checks and, for the higher classes, a special personal investigation that includes your finances, under the Security Protection Act.

  • Track · UK graduate

    Saab UK graduates

Saab UK runs a two-year graduate engineering programme starting in September 2027, with four six-month rotations, for example at its Blue Bear autonomy unit in Oakley, Bedfordshire. The ads ask for at least a 2:2 engineering degree and list National Security Vetting, reference checks and a security interview for every preferred candidate.

What is the Saab interview process?

The steps below come from Saab's own job ads, read on 1 November 2026, and from the Swedish Security Protection Act. Saab does not publish its interview rounds, so the interview row says what the ads say and nothing more.

01
Application
Online, through Saab's job portal

Saab's ads say it selects candidates continuously and may fill the role before the closing date. Read the last lines of the ad: they say whether the role needs vetting and whether it is placed in a security class.

02
Interviews
Not published by Saab

Saab does not list its interview rounds. Expect questions on the ad's technical requirements and on your projects. The UK graduate ads also list reference checks and checks on your right to work.

03
Security vetting (säkerhetsprövning)
Before you start; an interview, checks and, for security-class roles, register checks

Required by Saab's Swedish engineering ads. Under the Security Protection Act it has to happen before you take part in security-sensitive work, and Saab's own vetting officers conduct vetting interviews.

04
Security class and citizenship
Only for roles Saab places in a security class

The ad says so in plain words, for example a naval software section manager role: the position requires placement in a security class and therefore Swedish citizenship.

Security-class roles
05
UK screening and security interview
Before an offer is confirmed

Saab UK's graduate ads list Baseline Personnel Security checks, National Security Vetting, reference checks and right-to-work checks, and say every preferred candidate is placed through a security interview.

Saab security vetting (säkerhetsprövning) and the security interview

From Saab's ads and the Security Protection Act

Sweden's Security Protection Act (2018:585) says anyone who will take part in security-sensitive work must be vetted, and the vetting must happen before they start. Its purpose, in the Act's words, is to establish whether a person can be assumed to be loyal to the interests the law protects and otherwise reliable from a security point of view. Saab's Swedish engineering ads require it, and Saab employs vetting officers whose ad lists conducting vetting interviews (säkerhetsprövningsintervjuer) among their duties.

  • What the vetting is made of: The Act says every vetting includes a basic investigation (grundutredning). When the role is placed in a security class it adds a register check against criminal and suspicion records and police and Säkerhetspolisen data, and for security classes 1 and 2 a special personal investigation that includes your finances. Register checks and the personal investigation need your consent.
  • Who decides: The Act says the assessment is made by whoever decides on the employment, so for a Saab role it is Saab, unless a public authority has the decisive say. The vetting is followed up for as long as you work in the role.
  • The vetting interview: Saab's vetting officers hold vetting interviews as part of this. The Act says the vetting weighs circumstances that may mean a security vulnerability. Answer honestly and completely: its test is loyalty and reliability, not how well you present.
  • Security classes and citizenship: Saab's ads say a citizenship requirement may follow where Saab places the role in a security class, and some ads say it outright: a naval software section manager role requires placement in a security class and Swedish citizenship. In a sample of 12 Engineering ads read on Saab's portal on 1 November 2026, 10 carried the general vetting line and none the explicit citizenship rule; the other two were US roles. If you are not a Swedish citizen, check the last lines of each ad before applying.
  • Saab UK: Saab UK's graduate ads list Baseline Personnel Security checks, National Security Vetting, reference checks and right-to-work checks, and say all preferred candidates are placed through a security interview.

Calibrd does not rehearse the vetting interview, and nobody should: it is not a test to pass with good answers but a check that your answers are true. Calibrd can rehearse the technical and competency interviews aloud, with follow-up questions built from the Saab ad you are applying to.

What Saab screens for

Saab describes its purpose as helping nations keep their people and society safe. In an interview this shows up as:

  • Comfort with defence work, and an honest answer on why you want it
  • Discretion: you will not be able to talk about much of the work outside the team
  • Rigour on requirements, verification and documentation, which the systems engineering ads ask for
  • Good Swedish and English, which Swedish ads such as the Gripen radar integration one ask for
  • Honesty in the vetting, which looks at loyalty and reliability, not at your interview polish

How to prepare for a Saab interview

  1. Read the last lines of the ad first: they say whether the role needs vetting and whether it is placed in a security class, which can mean Swedish citizenship.
  2. Apply early: Saab says it selects as applications arrive and may fill the role before the closing date.
  3. Prepare to explain your projects, thesis or last role in depth, with the trade-offs you made.
  4. For systems roles, practise tracing one requirement from the customer to a test.
  5. Have an honest, calm answer ready on why you want to work in defence.
  6. In the vetting, answer every question truthfully and completely; ask the recruiter how long it usually takes for that role.
  7. Check the language line in the ad: the Gripen radar integration ad asks for good Swedish and English, so be ready to switch language.
  8. Saab UK graduates: check the right-to-work and vetting conditions in the ad before applying.

This guide covers engineering hiring at Saab in Sweden and Saab UK's graduate programme. Saab's US, German and Australian companies run their own processes. Saab does not publish its interview rounds, and we found no dated candidate accounts of them, so the guide does not describe them in detail. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
