Monzo interview, and the choice you make first.

Updated · Sources at the end

Monzo's engineering loop has one decision in it that is yours. After a first call about your recent work, you choose between a take-home task and a live pair coding session, then a final stage of system design and a behavioural interview. Monzo publishes most of this itself, in its job ads and on its blog: the pairing is short and comes with tests already written, the system design problem is deliberately not about Monzo, and you may not use an AI assistant in any interview. Everyone who reaches the final stage is offered a preparation call first.

Who Monzo hires

Monzo is a UK bank, and most of its engineering hiring is backend, with mobile, data and engineering management alongside. On 31 October 2026 its job board listed 64 open roles: 16 in Engineering and 13 in Data. Most UK roles are open to Cardiff, London or remote work in the UK, with no requirement to come into an office, and the backend ads say Monzo can sponsor visas. Barcelona hires backend and mobile engineers on a three-day office week. The Dublin roles are not in engineering.

Before you apply, see how your resume reads to a hiring manager with a free resume review.

The shape is the same across engineering, with different tasks and an extra round at the top. Monzo has written up each of these itself.

  • Track · Backend

    Backend, L40 to L60

A first call, a take-home or pair coding, then system design and a behavioural interview. Monzo's ads say the process sets your level, so applying at one level can lead to an offer at another.

  • Track · Senior Staff

    Senior Staff and above

Six interviews across four stages: a recruiter call, a project deep-dive, system design and pair coding, then behavioural and an Impact and Leadership interview. A take-home replaces the pairing only if needed.

  • Track · Mobile

    iOS and Android

A take-home on an existing app, timeboxed to four hours with no deadline, then a 45-minute review; or an hour of pairing. System design starts from a UI design and requirements.

  • Track · EM

    Engineering managers

A recruiter call and a one-hour initial call, then a three-and-a-half-hour loop: team and organisation management, system design, behavioural, and a half-hour chat with an engineering leader.

  • Track · Analytics

    Analytics engineering

    Monzo's May 2026 post lists a 30-minute recruiter call, a 45-minute initial call, a take-home with a week to finish, then a one-hour case study and a one-hour behavioural interview.

02

What is the Monzo interview process?

Monzo's backend ads list three stages: an initial call, a take-home task or pair coding exercise, and a final interview with system design and behavioural parts, taking around four weeks. Its backend interview guide, which the ads link to, describes the same steps in more detail, and says candidates who reach the final stage are offered a preparation call on what to expect, feedback so far and logistics.

01
Recruiter call
A short call

Your background, the role and logistics. Monzo's ads say the process will decide your level.

02
Initial call
One hour

Your recent projects in depth: data structures, language choices, performance and reliability trade-offs, and security. At Senior Staff level this is a project deep-dive with no whiteboarding and no code.

03
Take-home or pair coding
Your choice: a small program at home, or about 45 minutes of pairing

The take-home is a small program in the language you choose, reviewed with you on a call. The pairing asks you to implement functions behind an interface so pre-written unit tests pass, in a language such as Go, Python or Java. Monzo says it is not a LeetCode-style test.

Engineering
04
Preparation call
Offered before the final stage

What to expect in the final interviews, feedback on your progress, and logistics.

05
System design
One hour, on Excalidraw

A large technical problem that is hypothetical and not about Monzo, with databases, queues and the trade-offs between them. Senior Staff candidates get a slightly longer session.

06
Behavioural
One hour with two interviewers

Four areas: communication, learning, working in a team, and delivering projects.

07
Impact and Leadership
One hour

How you lead and the impact of your work beyond your own team.

Senior Staff and above

Take-home or pair coding: how to choose, and how to take each

From Monzo's own interview guides

Monzo lets you choose how its technical round runs. The take-home is a small program in the language you choose, which you then review with an engineer on a call. The pairing is about 45 minutes implementing functions behind an interface so that pre-written unit tests pass, in one of a wide range of languages such as Go, Python and Java. Monzo says neither is a LeetCode-style test, and it does not allow AI assistants during interviews.

  • Choose by how you work, not by what seems easier: Pairing rewards thinking aloud under a clock; the take-home rewards careful code you can defend. If you freeze when watched, take it home. If a take-home would eat a weekend you don't have, pair.
  • In the take-home, do exactly what is asked: Monzo says there are no bonus points for additional functionality. Spend the time on correctness, tests and readable code instead of extras.
  • Write the README Monzo recommends: Explain how to run it, the choices you made and what you would do with more time. It is the script for the review call.
  • Prepare to share your screen and walk through it: The take-home ends in a review call where you share your screen. Be ready to change something live and to say why you structured it the way you did.
  • In the pairing, read the tests first: The tests are already written, so they are the specification. Make them pass one at a time and say what you're doing. You may search the web, as Monzo allows Google and Stack Overflow.
  • Practise in the language you write fastest: Monzo offers the pairing in a wide range of languages, such as Go, Python and Java. Pick the one you write fastest, with your editor and test runner set up in advance.
  • Leave AI out, from start to finish: Monzo does not allow LLMs during interviews. Use AI to prepare if you like, as Monzo's own guide suggests, but do the task yourself.

Monzo's backend guide gives no time limit for the take-home; its mobile take-home is timeboxed to four hours with no deadline. Senior Staff candidates normally pair, with the take-home only if needed.

What Monzo screens for

Monzo does not publish a current list of values on its careers pages. What it does publish is what the behavioural interview covers, and the rules for the whole process.

  • Communication: one of the four areas the behavioural interview covers
  • Learning: how you pick up what you don't know
  • Working in a team
  • Delivering projects
  • Transparency: a Monzo recruiter names defaulting to transparency as a favourite value, and Monzo has written about being transparent by default since 2017
  • No AI in the room: Monzo does not allow LLMs during interviews

How to prepare for a Monzo interview

  1. Read Monzo's backend interview guide, which its job ads link to, before the first call.
  2. Prepare one recent project you can explain in depth: data structures, language choice, performance, reliability and security.
  3. Decide early between the take-home and pair coding, using how you work under a clock as the test.
  4. For pairing, practise implementing functions against existing unit tests in your strongest language.
  5. For the take-home, do only what is asked, write a README, and rehearse the screen-share review.
  6. Practise system design on large problems that have nothing to do with banking, drawing databases and queues on Excalidraw.
  7. Prepare one story for each behavioural area: communication, learning, working in a team, delivering projects.
  8. Take the preparation call before the final, and bring questions about who you will meet.
  9. Leave AI tools closed in every interview; Monzo does not allow them.
  10. Barcelona roles: plan for three days a week in the office.

This guide covers Monzo's engineering hiring: backend, Senior Staff, mobile, engineering management and analytics engineering, with the product manager loop in outline. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
