Safran interview process, from the HR call to the clearance.

Updated · Sources at the end

Safran's careers FAQ describes three steps: a pre-selection where the recruiter and the hiring manager read your application together, a phone interview, then one or more interviews with recruitment and with operational staff, including your future manager. Candidates add what the FAQ leaves out: for engineering roles, a personality questionnaire and an English test often come along the way, followed by an HR interview that goes back over your results. At Safran.AI, the group's AI company, every technical ad publishes the process, including a case study you present to a panel. And most defence roles end with a security clearance procedure, the French habilitation.

Safran builds aircraft and helicopter engines, aircraft equipment, and defence and optronics systems. On 13 February 2026 it reported 2025 sales of €31.3 billion, up 15%, with a record 1,802 LEAP engines delivered. It has more than 110,000 employees and expects sales to grow 12 to 15% in 2026.

01

Who Safran hires

Safran Aircraft Engines plans close to 5,000 hires by 2026, 800 of them at Villaroche, its largest site, across 26 job families from production to engineering: civil engine engineers, military engine fitters, data scientists. Safran Electronics & Defense hires embedded software engineers in Massy and Éragny-sur-Oise, asking for real-time C and C++, Linux, Yocto or FreeRTOS, Ethernet and CAN buses, and sometimes the DO-178 standard for safety-critical software. Safran.AI, formerly Preligens, bought in September 2024, has 250 staff across Paris, Rennes and Massy and hires AI engineers, deep learning scientists, MLOps engineers and SREs. Its job titles are in English, but the ads themselves are written in French. Final-year internships are common too, for example in systems engineering on a missile seeker at Éragny, posted at the end of September 2026.

Safran is a group of companies, and each one hires its own way. For an engineering role, what changes most is which company is hiring and how senior you are.

  • Track · Engineers

    Engineers in the group companies

Safran Aircraft Engines, Safran Electronics & Defense, Safran Helicopter Engines and the other companies follow the FAQ's process: pre-selection, a phone call, then interviews with recruitment and the team. Candidates often report a personality questionnaire and an English test on top, then an HR interview that discusses the results.

  • Track · Safran.AI

    Safran.AI, defence AI

Four steps published in every technical ad: 45 minutes with a recruiter, 45 minutes with the future manager or a team member, a case study presented to a panel of the manager and one or two peers, then 45 minutes with the manager's manager. Candidates also report a take-home technical test for some roles.

  • Track · Students

    Internships and apprenticeships

Reported by candidates: a technical interview with the engineer who will be your supervisor, then an HR interview on your motivation and how you fit into the team. The technical questions follow the assignment: strength of materials or fluid mechanics for an engine internship, basic mechanics for an engineering apprentice.

What is the Safran interview process?

The steps below combine Safran's careers FAQ and Safran.AI's job ads, read on 16 October 2026, with candidate reports on Glassdoor and Indeed, seen in search results and marked as reported. The year of those reports is not always shown.

01
Application and pre-selection
Online, through the Safran candidate portal

The recruiter and the hiring manager review your application together. If it is not picked, it goes into a candidate pool and can be considered for another role, Safran says.

02
Phone interview
With recruitment, about 15 minutes reported

Your background, motivation, availability and salary expectations. Candidates say your English may be checked as early as this call.

03
Personality questionnaire and English test
Online, before or between interviews

Several engineering candidates describe a behavioural questionnaire and an English test before the HR interview. Prepare your technical English: it is the working language of aerospace.

Often reported for engineers
04
Technical interview with the manager
1 hour to 1 hour 30 reported, on site or on Teams

Your background, the job description, and technical questions that get harder as you go. Where it can, Safran schedules several interviews on the same day, with a site visit and a chance to meet the team.

05
HR interview
One-to-one or in a group, depending on the company

Candidates at Safran Aircraft Engines describe a group HR interview about two weeks after the technical one, with feedback on the personality questionnaire and an English check. Expect the classic questions on your strengths, weaknesses and role in a team.

06
Case study panel
A case to prepare, then present

You present your work to your future manager and one or two peers; the last step is a 45-minute conversation with the manager's manager.

Safran.AI
07
Offer and clearance
After the decision

The recruiter calls you with the decision. For defence roles, the chosen candidate then goes through the habilitation procedure, explained below.

Safran tests: English, personality, case study and clearance

From Safran's ads and candidate reports

Safran's FAQ does not list any tests. Engineering candidates still often describe a personality questionnaire and an English test, and Glassdoor lists skills tests, presentations and personality tests among the steps most often reported at Safran. Safran.AI publishes its case study in its ads, and most defence roles go through the habilitation.

  • The personality questionnaire: Reported by engineering candidates, sometimes before the HR interview. At Safran Aircraft Engines, candidates describe a group HR interview where you get feedback on the questionnaire. Answer honestly and consistently, then prepare examples that back up what you answered.
  • The English test: Several candidates mention it, written or spoken, and some say English can be checked as early as the HR call. Practise presenting your background and one technical project in two minutes each.
  • The Safran.AI case study: Every Safran.AI technical ad includes it: you present your work to your future manager and one or two peers, after two 45-minute conversations and before the final interview with the manager's manager. Candidates also report a take-home technical test for some roles. Prepare a short presentation with your choices, their limits and what you would do next.
  • The habilitation, France's defence clearance: On 16 October 2026, 26 of Safran.AI's 28 ads said the chosen candidate would go through a clearance procedure under the French Defence Code and the IGI 1300 of 9 August 2021, and five also required the ability to obtain it. Safran Electronics & Defense ads, such as the optronics systems engineer role in Massy, carry the same clause. You do not need to be cleared to apply: the employer starts the procedure once you are chosen.
  • What the vetting looks at: According to the SGDSN, the French national security secretariat, the inquiry checks that nothing in your situation creates a risk of pressure or blackmail, such as sustained ties abroad, and it can take several months. Ask the recruiter how your start works while you wait.

Calibrd cannot run the personality questionnaire or the clearance. It can rehearse the technical interview, the HR interview and a case study presentation aloud with you, with follow-up questions built from the Safran job ad you are looking at.

The rest of the loop depends on your role. Pick it, or paste the posting, and Calibrd predicts the rounds and questions you are likely to get at Safran.

What Safran screens for

Safran sums up its culture as "Safran Together", in four principles: succeed together, build a climate of trust, dare to innovate, and commit to a shared vision. In interviews this shows up as:

  • Succeeding together: showing how you move a team forward, especially when other departments are involved
  • Trust: saying early when a result is not good, and keeping your commitments
  • Daring to innovate: proposing a concrete improvement while respecting safety and quality rules
  • A shared vision: knowing what your work is for, from the LEAP engine to a defence system
  • English: the working language of aerospace, which several candidates say was checked in interviews

How to prepare for a Safran interview

  1. Read the job description in detail: Safran's FAQ advises it, and candidates say the technical interview follows it closely.
  2. Prepare your background and one technical project as two-minute talks in English.
  3. Prepare three strengths and three weaknesses with a real example each, and an answer on your role in a team.
  4. Answer the personality questionnaire honestly: the HR interview can go back over your answers.
  5. Embedded software roles: revise real-time C and C++, embedded Linux and the buses named in the ad.
  6. Internships and apprenticeships: revise the basics of your field, such as strength of materials or fluid mechanics for an engine internship.
  7. Safran.AI: practise presenting a technical case in about fifteen minutes to two or three people, with your trade-offs.
  8. If the ad mentions habilitation, ask the recruiter early how long the procedure takes and how your start works meanwhile.
  9. If you hear nothing after an interview, follow up politely in writing after two weeks: several candidates report silence after interviews.

This guide covers hiring for engineers, interns and apprentices at Safran in France, at Safran Aircraft Engines, Safran Electronics & Defense, Safran Helicopter Engines and Safran.AI. Safran's UK companies run their own graduate schemes, and other group companies and countries can follow a different process. For management and leadership roles the loop is similar but the bar shifts to people, delivery and strategy, so pair it with the leadership interview prep hub. The bar for your exact role comes from the role-by-role guides, and the prep that actually transfers is spoken, so run a mock interview before the real one.
